Enjoy a 2-day geological trek to the summit of the active volcano Mt. Welirang. Pass through tranquil tropical forest, explore sulphur potholes on the slopes near the summit, and watch the sunrise from the top. Descend the mountain via Mt. Bakal and the village of Sumber Brantas, then continue through vegetable fields to the hot spring water pool at Cangar before returning to Malang.

Day by day

The itinerary

Day 01

Malang to Prigen and Trek to Pondok Lirang

05.00 am - Pick up from your hotel or the airport in Malang.
Drive by minibus or bus to the district of Prigen in East Java.
07.00 am - Arrive in Prigen, report to the BKSDA office, prepare logistics, and have breakfast at a warung.
08.00 am - Start trekking up the stony path to Kokopan.
12.00 pm - Stop for a lunch break at Kokopan.
01.00 pm - Continue the trek up to Pondok Lirang hut.
05.00 pm - Reach Pondok Lirang hut and stay overnight in shared hut accommodation.
07.00 pm - Have dinner and enjoy free time to explore the surrounding area.

Day 02

Summit of Mt. Welirang, Sumber Brantas, and Cangar

02.30 am - Wake up early and have tea or coffee served at the hut.
03.00 am - Trek up to the summit of Mt. Welirang.
05.00 am - Arrive at the summit of Mt. Welirang, watch the sunrise, and head down to the sulphur potholes to explore the sulphur rock formations.
Enjoy snacks and hot tea.
06.00 am - Descend to the village of Sumber Brantas via Mt. Bakal. Breakfast and snacks with hot tea are served in the forest.
12.00 pm - Come out of the forest, get picked up by a 4x4 vehicle, and continue driving to the village of Sumber Brantas and the hot spring water pool at Cangar.
Have lunch at Sumber Brantas.
02.00 pm - Reach Cangar and enjoy free time for a hot spring bath.
04.00 pm - Return to Malang by minibus.
06.00 pm - Transfer to your hotel or the airport.

The best trekking season runs from early May to the end of November, when there is less rain.
We are currently open for group tour bookings for the 2018 trekking season.
