Know before you go

Banks and exchange offices in Kyrgyzstan are very strict about foreign currency exchange. Recently, cases of counterfeit 10, 20, and 50 USD banknotes have increased, so banks and exchange offices no longer accept these denominations. It is best to bring 100 USD banknotes on the Kyrgyzstan side. Additionally, euros are not accepted due to recent fluctuations in the exchange rate. For your convenience, we strongly recommend bringing 100 USD bills in the new design, issued in 2013, and in good condition, without stamps, tears, dark spots, or other damage.

  • Electrical sockets in Kyrgyzstan require special plugs if you use the American-style type.
  • Please bring a USB charger suitable for a car charger to charge your phone. Our drivers do not have USB chargers for iPhones, only for Samsung.
  • Safety: Our country, like other Central Asian countries, is totally safe. Our people are welcoming and easy-going. If locals come to talk to you, it is usually because they are curious or want to speak English. Please do not leave your belongings unattended, and keep your valuables safely inside your tents during trekking.
  • Food: Kyrgyz cuisine includes mostly beef and different types of noodles. We love black tea and drink it three times a day. If you want coffee, just ask and the host can prepare a cup for you. It is also possible to prepare meals for vegetarians.
  • Roads: Roads can be in bad condition, both on highways and in mountainous areas, so please be prepared for this.
  • Toilets: Toilet conditions during the trip can be basic. Most are simple wooden constructions with holes or toilets like those shown in the picture. We try to find good Western toilets on the way, but in some areas they are not available.
