Chitwan National Park is very different from Kathmandu. The park is in the flat, warm lands of the Terai. It is a mix of thick sal forests, grassy fields, and river areas. The main rivers are the Narayani and the Rapti. This mix of land is a perfect home for many kinds of animals. The feeling in the jungle is different from the mountains. It is a world of its own, full of the sounds and smells of nature.
The trip is also a chance to see amazing wildlife and learn about local culture. Your main goal is to spot the one-horned rhino, which is very common here. You will also see many kinds of deer, monkeys, and colorful birds. The local Tharu people have lived here for a long time. You will get to walk through their villages. 1-Day Chitwan Plan from Kathmandu by Flight
7:00 AM – 8:00 AM: Hotel to Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA),
Kathmandu
Your day starts early. A taxi you booked ahead of time will take you to the local flight part of TIA. Make sure to get there at least one hour before your flight.
8:30 AM – 9:00 AM: The Short Flight
Buckle up and enjoy the fast flight south. Watch as the city of Kathmandu changes to green hills. Then, you will see the flat, wide lands of the Terai.
9:00 AM – 9:45 AM: Arrive and Go to Sauraha
The flight will land at Bharatpur Airport. The drive from the airport to Chitwan National Park (Sauraha area) is your first look at life in the country.
10:00 AM – 11:30 AM: Calm Rapti River Canoe Trip
Your first activity is one of the most peaceful things to do in Chitwan. You will get into a traditional wooden canoe. You will float slowly down the Rapti River. This is your best chance to see two kinds of crocodiles. These are the Gharial and the Mugger. They often lie in the sun on the riverbanks. You will also see many kinds of beautiful birds.
11:30 AM – 1:00 PM: The Main Event: 4WD Jeep Safari
This is the best part of Chitwan. You will go deep into the grassy areas and Sal forests of the park. You will ride in an open 4-wheel drive car. Your expert guide will help you find animals. Look closely for:
- The Great One-Horned Rhinoceros (you will most likely see one)
- Spotted, Hog, and Sambar Deer
- Wild Boar
- Monkeys
- Many kinds of birds
If you are very lucky, you might see the hard-to-find Royal Bengal Tiger or a Sloth Bear.
1:00 PM – 2:00 PM: Real Nepali Lunch
After the fun safari, you will eat a tasty lunch at a resort by the river in Sauraha. The food often includes local Tharu-style dishes and other popular Nepali food.
2:00 PM – 3:30 PM: Tharu Village Walk
Learn about the culture of the Tharu people. They are the first people to live in the Chitwan Valley. A short walk with a guide through a local village will show you their special mud and stick homes. You will also see how they live their daily lives.
3:30 PM – 4:15 PM: Go back to Bharatpur Airport
It is time to start your trip back to the capital city. Your mind will be full of jungle memories.
5:00 PM – 5:30 PM: Flight from Bharatpur to Kathmandu
Flights from Bharatpur to Kathmandu usually have several options late in the afternoon. These are perfect for people on a day trip.
6:30 PM onwards: Arrive in Kathmandu and Go to Hotel
You will get back to Kathmandu in the early evening. This is just in time for dinner. You will have seen a totally different part of the world in just one day.
