Astam Village Day Hiking
Drive from Pokhara to Dhampus (1–1.5 hours)
After breakfast at your hotel, Marvel Treks representatives will pick you up in a private vehicle. You will enjoy a scenic drive of approximately 1 to 1.5 hours through winding mountain roads to reach Dhampus Village, which serves as the starting point for your hike to Astam Village. Dhampus sits at an elevation of around 1,650 meters and offers your first glimpses of the majestic Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges.
Hike from Dhampus to Astam Village (2.5–3 hours)
From Dhampus, you will begin your trek toward Astam Village along a trail that winds through enchanting rhododendron forests (which burst into crimson blooms in spring), terraced farmlands showcasing centuries-old agricultural practices, and traditional Gurung settlements where time seems to stand still.
The moderately challenging path is a photographer’s paradise, rewarding you with ever-changing panoramic views of Annapurna South (7,219 m), the iconic pyramid-shaped Machhapuchhre/Fishtail (6,993 m)—considered sacred and forbidden to climb—Himchuli, and the mighty Dhaulagiri range. On clear days, you may witness golden sunlight touching the snow-capped peaks, creating a magical play of light and shadow across the Himalayan landscape.
As you approach Astam Village, situated at approximately 1,500 meters, you will pass through charming local communities where villagers go about their daily routines—women weaving traditional textiles, farmers tending their crops, and children playing along the trails. Astam Village is often referred to as a hidden gem of the Annapurna region, offering an authentic glimpse into rural Nepali life largely untouched by mass tourism.
Upon arrival, take time to rest at local teahouses, interact with hospitable locals, and savor authentic home-cooked cuisine such as dhido, gundruk, and freshly prepared sel roti. The village offers 270-degree panoramic views of multiple Himalayan peaks and lush valleys below, along with a deep insight into traditional mountain life and local Hindu and Buddhist practices.
Hike down to Hemja from Astam Village (2.5–3 hours)
After lunch and exploring Astam Village’s narrow alleys, terraced fields, and small temples, you will begin your descent toward Hemja. The downhill trail passes through pine and rhododendron forests, terraced hillsides, and small settlements where locals greet you with warm smiles and friendly “Namaste.”
The descent takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours and continues to offer beautiful mountain and valley views. Afternoon light adds a golden glow to the landscape, making it an ideal time for photography.
Drive back to Pokhara from Hemja (30–40 minutes)
Once you reach Hemja—a lively town known for its Tibetan refugee settlement and carpet weaving industry—Marvel Treks representatives will be waiting to receive you. You will then enjoy a comfortable 30–40 minute drive back to your hotel in Pokhara, concluding your memorable Astam Village day hike.
