Guided by an environmental biologist with over 200 successful ascents, this is more than a hike—it is an immersive journey through the high-altitude ecosystems of Volcan Baru.

Sunrise Trek: Hike under a canopy of stars, experience the thrill of nocturnal wildlife, and reach the summit just in time to watch the world awaken. On clear mornings, you will be rewarded with the rare view of both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean.
Sunset Trek: Utilize the daylight to fully appreciate the changing vegetation. This option is a paradise for birdwatching (including the Resplendent Quetzal) and mycology, culminating with a spectacular sunset over a sea of clouds, followed by a sensory night descent.

Itinerary

? Option A: Sunrise Expedition The classic itinerary to attempt viewing both oceans from the highest point in Panama.
- 23:00 (11:00 PM): Pick-up at your hotel (downtown Boquete area only). Gear check and safety briefing.
- 23:45 (11:45 PM): Official registration at the Volcan Baru National Park ranger station and start of the ascent.
- 00:00 - 05:30: Guided ascent. We will make strategic stops for hydration and nocturnal wildlife observation under my guidance as an environmental biologist.
- 05:45: Arrival at the summit (3,474 meters / 11,398 feet). Time to layer up and prepare for the sunrise.
- 06:00 - 07:30: Volcano Summit. Sunrise observation, view of both oceans (weather permitting), photo session, and a comforting mountain breakfast.
- 07:30 - 08:30: Biological interpretation talk about high-altitude ecosystems and the volcano's geology.
- 08:30: Start of the descent. The perfect time to appreciate the flora and birds we couldn't see during the night.
- 12:30: Arrival at the ranger station and transfer back to your hotel.
- 13:00: End of the expedition.
? Option B: Sunset Expedition A unique option to hike up during daylight, ideal for birdwatching and mycology, culminating with the sunset.
- 13:00 (1:00 PM): Pick-up at your hotel (downtown Boquete area only). Gear check and registration.
- 13:30: Start of the ascent. We will use the daylight for an in-depth biological interpretation of the changing vegetation as we gain elevation.
- 13:30 - 18:00: Hiking ascent. Ideal time for cloud forest birdwatching (such as the Quetzal) and mycology.
- 18:15: Arrival at the summit. Positioning for the sunset.
- 18:30 - 19:30: Volcano Summit. Enjoy the sunset over the Pacific, photos, and a light lunch / trail snack at the summit.
- 19:30: Start of the night descent. A different sensory experience, guided by headlamps under the starry sky.
- 23:30: Arrival at the ranger station and transfer back to your hotel.
- 00:00: End of the expedition.

What's Included

Specialized Guiding: Biological interpretation of the cloud forest and high-altitude ecosystems.

Includes: National Park entrance fee, accident insurance policy, and a comforting breakfast on the mountain.

What's Excluded

Transportation from other cities: The included transportation (in applicable packages) is exclusively from the downtown Boquete area. If you are staying in David or other areas, you must arrange your own transport to our meeting point in Boquete.

Trail snacks and hydration: Each person must bring their own water (minimum 2 liters) and energy snacks to consume during the trip.

Unspecified meals: Any meal (lunch or dinner) that is not explicitly detailed in the description of your selected package.

Gratuities (Optional): Tips for the guide or the 4x4 driver are not included, but are highly appreciated if you feel you received exceptional service.

Personal expenses or personal gear: Medications, extra purchases, or personal hiking gear (such as boots or backpacks).

Know Before You Go

1. Altitude and Your Health ?️

We will reach 3,474 meters (11,398 feet) above sea level (the highest point in Panama). At this altitude, there is less oxygen, and feeling a bit of fatigue or a mild headache is completely normal.

Prevention: I highly recommend staying well-hydrated the day before, avoiding alcohol the night prior, and letting me know if you have any heart, respiratory, or knee conditions (especially if you are hiking).

2. Weather and Scenery (The Surprise Factor) ☁️

The high-mountain ecosystem is unpredictable. Temperatures at the summit can drop to 0°C (32°F) or below, and strong winds are very common.

While we always go up hoping to see both oceans (the Pacific and the Caribbean) and a clear sunrise, nature is in charge. Sometimes the mountain welcomes us with a spectacular "sea of clouds." Visibility cannot be guaranteed, but the adventure and the biological interpretation of the environment will always be worth it.

3. Mountain Facilities ?

Volcan Baru National Park is a rugged, protected wild area. There are no conventional public restrooms along the trail; we will use "nature breaks" with the utmost respect for the environment. Facilities at the summit are extremely basic.

4. Strict Punctuality ⏰

To reach the summit at the perfect time (especially for sunrises), our departure time is exact. A delay could cost us our entry to the park or cause us to miss the best morning light.

5. "Leave No Trace" Philosophy ?

As an environmental biologist, my commitment is to protect our ecosystem. Everything we bring up must come back down with us. We will not leave any trash behind or disturb the local flora, fauna, or fungi. We will only take photographs and memories.

What To Bring

Hello! To ensure you fully enjoy your expedition to the highest point in Panama and stay comfortable and safe through the changing weather, here is your packing list:

Clothing (Layering is key!):

Base layer: Breathable long-sleeve shirt (dry-fit style). Avoid cotton as it traps sweat and makes you cold!

Middle layer: Thermal shirt, fleece, or wool sweater to retain body heat.

Outer layer: Waterproof and windproof jacket (windbreaker). It gets very windy at the summit.

Pants: Comfortable and flexible hiking pants (no jeans, please).

Note: If you booked the 4x4 or Mixed package, remember that I will provide an extra high-mountain winter coat for the summit.

Footwear & Accessories:

Hiking boots or trail running shoes (with good grip, the terrain is rocky).

1 or 2 pairs of extra thick socks.

Warm beanie/hat, winter gloves, and a scarf or neck gaiter (buff).

Backpack & Personal Items:

Identification: Original Passport or ID card (mandatory for National Park registration).

Comfortable small backpack (daypack) to keep your essentials handy.

Water bottle or Camelbak (I recommend at least 2 liters if you are hiking).

Quick energy snacks for the trail: chocolates, protein bars, nuts, or gummies.

Sunscreen, sunglasses (for the descent), and lip balm (the wind really dries out your lips).

Personal medication (if applicable).
