Volcan Baru Sunrise or Sunset Summit Trek
Option A: Sunrise Expedition
The classic itinerary to attempt viewing both oceans from the highest point in Panama.
23:00 (11:00 PM): Pick-up at your hotel (downtown Boquete area only). Gear check and safety briefing.
23:45 (11:45 PM): Official registration at the Volcan Baru National Park ranger station and start of the ascent.
00:00 - 05:30: Guided ascent. We will make strategic stops for hydration and nocturnal wildlife observation under my guidance as an environmental biologist.
05:45: Arrival at the summit (3,474 meters / 11,398 feet). Time to layer up and prepare for the sunrise.
06:00 - 07:30: Volcano summit. Sunrise observation, views of both oceans (weather permitting), a photo session, and a comforting mountain breakfast.
07:30 - 08:30: Biological interpretation talk about high-altitude ecosystems and the volcano's geology.
08:30: Start of the descent. This is the perfect time to appreciate the flora and birds we could not see during the night.
12:30: Arrival at the ranger station and transfer back to your hotel.
13:00: End of the expedition.
Option B: Sunset Expedition
A unique option to hike up during daylight, ideal for birdwatching and mycology, culminating with the sunset.
13:00 (1:00 PM): Pick-up at your hotel (downtown Boquete area only). Gear check and registration.
13:30: Start of the ascent. We will use the daylight for an in-depth biological interpretation of the changing vegetation as we gain elevation.
13:30 - 18:00: Hiking ascent. This is an ideal time for cloud forest birdwatching, such as spotting the Quetzal, and for mycology.
18:15: Arrival at the summit. Positioning for the sunset.
18:30 - 19:30: Volcano summit. Enjoy the sunset over the Pacific, take photos, and have a light lunch/trail snack at the summit.
19:30: Start of the night descent. This is a different sensory experience, guided by headlamps under the starry sky.
23:30: Arrival at the ranger station and transfer back to your hotel.
00:00: End of the expedition.
