Day 01
Mabamba Swamp Birding and Shoebill Search
- Depart early in the morning, around 6:00 am, from Kampala or Entebbe and drive to Mabamba Swamp, a journey of approximately one hour and thirty minutes.
- Arrive at Mabamba Swamp on the northern shores of Lake Victoria, a Ramsar-listed wetland and Important Bird Area.
- Board a wooden motorised canoe and begin a guided boat excursion through narrow papyrus-lined channels.
- Search for the rare Shoebill Stork in its natural habitat with the assistance of an experienced local birding guide.
- Observe additional wetland species and, with luck, spot the elusive Sitatunga antelope.
- Continue birding in the surrounding grasslands, papyrus swamps, and farmland areas.
- Look out for species such as Long-crested Eagle, Palm-nut Vulture, Black-winged Kite, African Harrier-Hawk, Great Blue Turaco, hornbills, kingfishers, rollers, sunbirds, and weavers.
- Enjoy lunch at Nkima Forest Lodge, named after the red-tailed monkeys commonly seen in the area.
- Return to Kampala or Entebbe in the afternoon for onward travel.
