Caring and Knowledgeable

Reviewed May 12, 2016

In the Fall of 2014 we joined a tour from Far & High to Bhutan.

Rinzin Wangchuk was our guide for the entire 10 day trip. He explained the culture and particularly the stories of Buddhism and the various monastaries we visited. He also offered explanations of his country's dress code and the reason behind thier GNH (Gross National Happiness) in place of GNP.  We visited schools and

learned about their art, weaving and crafts and how the students progressed and become more skilled.

Of course, our last event was the hike to the "Tigers Nest" and all of the myths behind its existence.

We found the country very friendly and everyone seemed to be "Happy".  It was an amazing trip and

Rinzin and our bus driver played a big role in all of it.

We loved having Rinzin Wangchuk as our guide. He was fun, personable, knowledgeable and caring throughout the entire trip.

More than I expected

Rinzin Wangchuk is an excellent guide. On my recent trip to Bhutan, three friends and I decided on a tour focused on the culture and arts of the country. Rinzin provided a rich experience of festivals, temples, art, artists in training, paper-making and markets for weaving/crafts among other things. He was very knowledgeable about the history, stories and myths of the sacred places we visited and gave us a good background. He took us to a museum that showed us the ecosystems of Bhutan to give us an appreciation of how varied the land was from the Himalayas down to the borders of India. We were able to see almost all of what we wanted including the fire festival in Bumthang province. I arrived in Bhutan after a long illness and was not very strong but he was still able to guide me safely to the famous Tiger’s Nest Monastery built high on a cliff north of Paro. When unexpected things happened like a large group of monkeys appearing on the road as we drove east, he was open to spontaneously stopping to watch. He taught us about the birds we saw during the entire drive and phrases of the Bhutanese language. He listened carefully to our questions and requests. He made things fun. We met nuns and were able to listen to their chanting. The markets for woven goods and crafts were beautiful. His network of contacts with the people in the areas we visited provided information of local changes in the time of events and our trip flowed seamlessly. We enjoyed the food and accommodations and the healing hot herbal bath was a great way to end our last day there. The trip was more than what I expected. We were aware that he also guided trekking/boating/birding tours but we did not have the time to do both types of tours well.
