Description

Climb Mount Meru on a four day trekking adventure through Arusha National Park with dramatic landscapes and rich wildlife. Walk through montane forest with giraffes and colobus monkeys cross scenic rivers and ascend to alpine moorland. Acclimatise on Little Meru before a midnight summit attempt to Socialist Peak. Follow the crater rim at sunrise enjoy ash cone views and descend through changing scenery for a rewarding high altitude mountain experience. Led by experienced guides this climb balances challenge safety scenery.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport
- Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport.
Day 2: Hiking Through Arusha National Park
- Begin the first day of hiking with a ranger escort through Arusha National Park.
- Spot wildlife such as giraffes buffalo antelopes zebras and colobus monkeys.
- Observe a variety of bird species including turacos hornbills and other forest birds.
- Pass scenic landmarks such as the Ngarenanyuki River and the iconic Fig Tree Arch.
- Enjoy views of Mount Kilimanjaro the surrounding highlands and diverse vegetation with opportunities to spot wildlife.
- Cover a distance of eight kilometres in approximately three to five hours.
- Follow a steady climb through montane forest and open moorland.
- Hike to Little Meru at 3820 metres in the afternoon for acclimatisation.
- Stay overnight at Saddle Hut.
- Enjoy views of Mount Kilimanjaro the ash cone and Mount Meru walls.
Day 3: Summit Attempt and Descent
- Hike from Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut at 3570 metres.
- Begin the summit attempt around midnight.
- Follow the crater rim trail along a dramatic knife edge with views into the crater and ash cone.
- Reach Socialist Peak at 4566 metres and witness sunrise from the summit.
- Observe the unique ash cone located inside the crater.
- Descend from the summit via Saddle Hut to Miriakamba Hut.
Day 4: Descent to Momella Gate
- Descend from Saddle Hut to Miriakamba Hut.
- Enjoy a quick lunch before continuing the descent.
- Walk down to the main Momella Gate marking the end of the hiking programme.
- Observe scenery wildlife and vegetation missed during the ascent including buffalo warthogs monkeys zebras giraffes and antelopes.

Know Before You Go

Physical Fitness & Training: It is considered a challenging, steep hike, especially the final, narrow rocky ridge to the summit. Training should include endurance exercises like hiking with a loaded pack and cardio sessions for 1–2 months prior.

Altitude & Safety: Altitude sickness is possible, so hydration, slow pacing, and listening to your guide are crucial. The 4-day itinerary is recommended over the 3-day option for better acclimatization.

What is the best time to Go?: The best times are during the dry seasons: June to October and December to February.

Gear & Packing: Pack layers for rapid weather changes (rain, mist, cold), and you must have a headlamp for the pre-dawn summit attempt.

Budget & Tips: Budget for trekking costs, plus 10–15% extra for guide/porter tips.

What To Bring

Personal Gear: Hiking gear such as trekking poles, sleeping bags, and specialized clothing is typically not included, though rentals are usually available.

Hotel Meals & Drinks: Lunches and dinners at the hotel before/after the trek are usually not included (only breakfast).

Alcoholic & Soft Drinks: Alcoholic beverages and soft drinks on the mountain or in hotels are excluded.

Personal Items: Laundry services, phone calls, and toiletries are excluded.
