Description

Go on a 6-day trek to Mount Kilimanjaro from the Rongai route, which is a lesser-known track that may not be quite as spectacular as the western routes, but it does usually have far lower traffic than the other five night routes. Take this route that retains a sense of unspooling wilderness and offers a different perspective on Kilimanjaro, by approaching it from the north.

Highlights
  • Climb up to Mount Kilimanjaro via Rongai Route
  • Experience scenic views of Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks
  • Witness the stunning sunset views from the summit
  • Day 1: Rongai Gate to Simba Camp expand_more
    • Pick up from the hotel and drive to the Marangu Gate (approximately 1,8km).
    • Complete the necessary park registration and proceed to the Nalemoru Gate (Just under 2km).
    • Meet the crew and enjoy a comforting hot lunch served at the gate.
    • Embark on the great journey to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trek starts with a twisting path that intersects with a field of maize.
    • Enter the ember canopies of the dense forest and walk along the moist floor. The trees above the misty paths are home to the striking blue monkey, the contrasting black and white colobus, and the adorable bushbaby. The trek lasts three to four hours.
    • Spend the night at the Simba Camp (2650m).

    Comprehensive camping facilities are provided.

  • Day 2: Simba Camp to Kikelewa Caves expand_more
    • In the morning, start the journey towards Kibo.
    • Arrive at the second ancient cave, and an appetizing hot lunch will be served.
    • After lunch, trek through a brief section of the barren dunes of the moorland and continue amid the heather vegetation zone which is studded with ethereal, enormous lobelias. There is a high possibility of viewing the breathtaking display of the Kibo peak. There is also a chance to spot jackals and the odd buffalo.
    • Reach the Kikelewa Caves camp, and relax for the remaining hours of the day (3600m).
  • Day 3: Kikelewa Caves to Mawenzi Tarn expand_more
    • Enjoy breakfast at the campsite.
    • Start the trek on a short inclined pasture that leads to an area of wilderness. A low desert environment will replace the limited vegetation.
    • Arrive at the Mawenzi Tarn Hut (4,330m) where a delectable hot lunch will be served. There is a possibility of small excursions for acclimatisation taking place.
    •  Spend the rest of the day lounging at the campsite.
  • Day 4: Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut expand_more
    • Travel up to a desolate site that leads to ‘The Saddle’ – an extensive lunar lava stone landscape that stretches between Mawenzi and Kibo. The journey is complemented by the marvelous views of the towering upper regions of Kilimanjaro.
    • Reach the Kibo Huts (4703m) and a steaming hot meal will be served in the afternoon.
    • Relax for the remainder of the day.
    • Get to bed early for the climb to the summit at midnight.
  • Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut expand_more
    • Start the voyage to the summit at midnight and this is the longest, most laborious day of the whole trek. The trail consists of a long, sharp slope until we pass the Hans Meyer Cave. At this point, the path transforms into a twisting, single-file lane.
    • Head to Gillman’s Point (5685m) and use a brief path with a terrain that is laden with rocks, some climbing is necessary. This is the biggest difficulty of the ascension.
    • Reach Gilman’s point or the lips of Kilimanjaro, this indicates that Uhuru Peak (5885m) is merely a two-hour hike away.
    • Arrive at Uhuru and behold the spectacle of the first peach hued rays of light brushing against the ice laden fields of the Mawenzi Peaks.
    • Start the descent to the Kibo Hut. Take a short, desirable break.
    • Proceed to the Horombo Huts and at this point, beam with joy at the sight of the sleeping bag.
  • Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate expand_more
    • After breakfast, descend to the Marangu gate.
    • Encounter the Mandara Hut and travel through the lush rainforest once again.
    • Reach the Marangu gate and receive the certificate.
