Description
Tanzania's Mount Meru is an active stratovolcano situated close to Mount Kilimanjaro. It is the fifth-highest mountain in Africa, rising to 4,562 meters (14,968 feet) and providing a demanding yet worthwhile trekking experience. Ascend through different flora zones, such as grasslands, rainforests, moorlands, and alpine deserts. The mountain that lies below Mount Kilimanjaro is called Mount Meru.
Itinerary

Day 1: Momella Gate to Miriakamba Hut
- Pick up at the starting point in Moshi.
- Start your hike at Momella Gate (1,500 meters/4,921 feet) after registering with the park authorities.
- Trek through the lush montane forest, where you may encounter wildlife such as colobus monkeys and various bird species.
- Reach Miriakamba Hut (2,514 meters/8,250 feet) after approximately 4-6 hours of hiking.
- Spend the night at the hut and rest for the next day’s ascent.

Day 2: Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut
- Continue your ascent towards Saddle Hut (3,570 meters/11,712 feet).
- Pass through heather and moorland vegetation zones, enjoying breathtaking views of Mount Meru’s crater and the surrounding landscape.
- The hike takes around 3-5 hours.
- Arrive at Saddle Hut and rest for the night.

Day 3: Summit Day - Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak and back to Miriakamba Hut
- Begin your summit attempt during the early hours of the morning (around midnight).
- Ascend through alpine desert terrain and face steep sections as you approach Socialist Peak (4,562 meters/14,968 feet), the highest point of Mount Meru.
- Reach the summit in time to witness a magnificent sunrise over the African plains.
- Descend back to Saddle Hut for a well-deserved rest and then continue down to Miriakamba Hut.

Day 4: Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate
- Descend through the forest, retracing your steps back to Momella Gate.
- Complete the necessary paperwork with the park authorities.
- Celebrate your successful Mount Meru hike and return to your accommodation at Moshi.
