Description
The Marangu Route, known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” is the oldest and most popular path up Mount Kilimanjaro. Traversing all climatic zones-from lush tropical forest to barren alpine desert-it offers a unique trekking experience with dormitory-style huts for overnight stays. This 6-day trek allows you to hike through scenic landscapes, spot wildlife like monkeys and exotic birds, explore unique flora such as Senecio and Lobelia, and summit Uhuru Peak for breathtaking views.
Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival & Trek to Mandara Hut
- The trek starts at Marangu Gate (1860 m) and finishes at Mandara Hut (2700 m).
- You will gain approximately 840 m in altitude over 3–4 hours of walking.
- The trail passes through a beautiful tropical forest filled with trees, ferns, and flowers.
- Keep an eye out for monkeys and exotic birds along the way.
Arrive at Mandara Hut for your first overnight stay.

Day 2: Trek to Horombo Hut
- You start from Mandara Hut (2700 m) and hike to Horombo Hut (3700 m).
- The altitude gain is around 1000 m, taking 5–6 hours to complete.
- The trail passes through moorlands with iconic Senecio and Lobelia plants.
- Enjoy stunning views of the Kibo and Mawenzi peaks during the hike.
Arrive at Horombo Hut and rest while soaking in the panoramic mountain scenery.

Day 3: Acclimatization at Horombo Hut
- The day involves a short hike from Horombo Hut (3700 m) and back, with an altitude change of 400 m.
- Walking time is approximately 4–5 hours.
- You will hike to the unique Zebra Rocks to help your body acclimatize.
- Observe the fascinating alpine flora and geological formations along the way.
Return to Horombo Hut in the afternoon to rest and prepare for higher altitudes.

Day 4: Trek to Kibo Hut
- The hike begins at Horombo Hut (3700 m) and ends at Kibo Hut (4700 m).
- You will gain 1000 m in altitude over 5–6 hours of trekking.
- The landscape changes from moorland to barren rock as you climb.
- Pass the Last Water Point and cross the Saddle with breathtaking views of the Kibo Hut.
Arrive at Kibo Hut to rest before the summit attempt.

Day 5: Summit Day & Descent to Horombo Hut
- You start very early from Kibo Hut (4700 m) and ascend to Gillman’s Point on the crater’s edge.
- Continue onwards to Uhuru Peak, the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.
- After reaching the summit, descend via Kibo Hut to Horombo Hut, covering an altitude gain of 1195 m and a loss of 2200 m.
- Walking time for the day is around 12–16 hours.
- Celebrate your summit achievement with the trekking team at Horombo Hut.

Day 6: Descent to Marangu Gate & Departure
- Begin the final descent from Horombo Hut (3700 m) to Marangu Gate (1860 m).
- The altitude loss is approximately 1840 m, taking 6–7 hours to complete.
- Trek through the cool, green forest while enjoying the serene surroundings.
- Participate in a farewell ceremony with the trekking crew at Horombo Hut.
- Transfer to Moshi for onward travel or accommodation.
