Itinerary
-
Day 1: Moshi – Machame Gate – Machame Campsite
- After breakfast, our vehicle will transport you from the hotel drive to Machame gate.
- Do the necessary registration procedures and start the trek through the rainforest to Machame camp, where the tents are already set up.
Dinner and overnight at the campsite.
-
Day 2: Machame Hut Campsite to Shira Campsite
- After breakfast, leave the rainforest glades and continue ascending by crossing little valleys and steep rocky ridges covered with heather plants to the western side of the mountain where the camp is situated.
- At the Shira campsite, watch the spectacular view of Mount Meru, Shira Plateau, Kibo Peak and sunset.
Dinner and overnight.
-
Day 3: Shira Campsite to Barranco Campsite (3800m to 3950m)
- This is a long and important acclimatization day, so have breakfast early.
- Continue trekking east to a junction leading to Lava tower rock 4600m for acclimatization.
- Afterwards, continue down to Barranco camp.
Dinner and overnight at Barranco.
-
Day 4: Barranco Campsite to Karanga Campsite (3950m to 3900m)
- In the morning, start climbing the Barranco wall, reach 4200m for acclimatization, and continue crossing ridges and valleys to Karanga campsite for hot lunch.
- After lunch, rest and get another acclimatization by trekking up the scree slopes towards the southern ice field.
Return to the camp for supper and overnight.
-
Day 5: Karanga Campsite to Barafu Campsite (3900m to 4620m)
- The trek up to the Barafu ridge campsite is tough because of the altitude. The trek takes a few hours because of the short distance but is steep, needing a slow pace to avoid fatigue.
- Trek across an alpine desert. Chances are that a strong, cold wind will blow from Kibo peak and its ice. Have an early dinner at 1700hrs, then rest until midnight, when you will go for the summit.
-
Day 6: Barafu Hut Campsite / Uhuru Peak / Mweka Campsite (4620m to 5895m to 3100m)
- Wake to a light breakfast and then prepare for your summit ascent. The goal is to climb before dawn so you can reach Uhuru Peak shortly before or after sunrise. The trails are a series of switchbacks up steep scree or possibly snow and reach Stella Point on the crater rim at 5,861 m/18,640 ft between 4 and 5 AM. At this point, you will have views of the fabled crater and its glaciers facing you.
- After 1 hour of hiking along the Kibo crater rim near the celebrated snow, it takes you to Kilimanjaro's true summit, Uhuru Peak. Spend some time taking photos.
- After the summit activities are done, descend back to the Barafu campsite for lunch, rest, collect your equipment, and continue down through the moorland and heath zone to the Mweka campsite.
Dinner and overnight at Mweka campsite.
-
Day 7: Mweka Campsite to Mweka Gate (3100m to 1700m)
- After breakfast, descend to Mweka park gate, walking across Montane forest. This descent will take 3-4 hours.
- At the gate, you will sign out and board the vehicle for the transfer back to the hotel for your certificate presentation and a well-deserved celebration.
-
Day: 8 Tarangire National Park
- The safari begins with a morning pick-up from the hotel in Moshi and a briefing by your guide before you leave.
- Head for Tarangire National Park, home to large elephant herds and other animals, including its tree-climbing lions.
- Once you enter the park, the roof of the 4X4 vehicle comes down, and you spend the rest of the day watching wildlife and enjoying a packed lunch in the shade.
Overnight at Lake Burunge Tented Camp.
-
Day 9 & 10: Serengeti National Park
- After breakfast, travel through the Rift Valley landscape and into the cooler climate of the crater highlands.
- Have lunch on the way and stop and gaze down into the giant Ngorongoro Crater from a viewing platform.
- Spend time here taking advantage of the game-rich location and expert guide to enjoy amazing game sightings and plenty to talk about around the campfire later. The Serengeti is an excellent year-round destination for wildlife, but it is when the Wildebeest Migration arrives – from about November to June - that you can expect some of its most iconic imagery. The accommodation for the next two nights depends on the time of year: your tented camp is mobile and follows the rhythm of the Migration, almost guaranteeing you front-row seats to all the action.
-
Day 11: Ngorongoro Crater
- Start early in the morning as you drive back to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and its highlight – the Ngorongoro Crater. The remains of a gigantic volcanic explosion millions of years ago are home to Africa’s densest concentration of big animals.
- Descending into the Crater, pick out the familiar shapes of elephant and buffalo on the crater floor, mingled with zebra, wildebeest and gazelles. It is also one of Africa’s greatest concentrations of big predators. Lions, leopards and hyenas are regularly seen, and you may see flamingos and hippos in the Crater’s lakes.
- Leaving on a different road, travel to the town of Karatu and the final accommodation.
-
Day 12: Drive Back to Arusha/Moshi
- Have breakfast and drive back to Arusha/Moshi.
- Stop for lunch on the way and arrive in town around noon. You will be taken to your hotel or airport.
