Explore the Mangapwani Coral Caves of Zanzibar
- Meet the guide at your hotel at 8:30 AM and drive to the Mangapwani Caves.
- Visit the Mangapwani Coral Cave, which is a large natural cavern with a freshwater pool.
- Make your way to the Slave Chamber - a dark cave cut into the coral rock used as a holding place to hide slaves for the illegal trade. Illicit slave trading continued for many years after the legal trade was abolished toward the end of the 19th century. The dirt path that goes from the beach to the Slave Chamber is still visible.
- Visit the modern memorial built in memory of all the victims of the slave trade. The area is surrounded by various indigenous trees such as Breadfruit, Rambutans, and scent shrubs. An abandoned cargo ship remains on the shore close to Mangapwani Cave to remind us what happened here.
