Itinerary
-
Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp (2832 m)
Your adventure begins with a transfer to Machame Gate for registration and briefing. After meeting your guides and porters, you start trekking through the lush rainforest filled with birds, monkeys, and giant ferns. The trail gradually ascends through shaded mossy terrain until you reach Machame Camp, where you will enjoy your first hot dinner on the mountain.
-
Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp (3,750m)
Today you climb out of the rainforest and into the moorland zone. The trail becomes steeper, offering spectacular views of Mount Meru and the Shira Plateau. After a rewarding day of hiking, you arrive at Shira Camp, set on a wide, open plateau with stunning sunset views.
-
Day 3: Shira Camp to Lava Tower (4,600 m) to Barranco Camp (3,900 m)
This is a key acclimatization day. You hike upward toward the Lava Tower, a massive volcanic formation at 4,600 m where you stop for lunch. Then you descend to Barranco Camp, giving your body time to adjust to higher altitude. This “climb high, sleep low” method greatly improves summit success. The evening views at Barranco, with the Breach Wall rising above, are unforgettable.
-
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp (4,673 m)
Your day begins with climbing the famous Barranco Wall, a thrilling and fun scramble that rewards you with incredible views. The trail continues across ridges and valleys before arriving at Karanga Camp for lunch, after lunch ascent to Barafu Camp, the base camp for the summit. The landscape is barren and striking, with views stretching across the rugged alpine desert. After an early dinner, you prepare for the midnight summit attempt. Rest early, as the biggest day awaits.
-
Day 5: Summit Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) – Descent to Mweka Camp
Around midnight, you begin your final ascent to the top of Africa. The climb is steep and demanding, but as dawn breaks you reach Stella Point and continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point on the continent. After celebrating your achievement, you descend back to Barafu for a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp for rest and overnight.
-
Mweka Camp Descent to Mweka Gate
After breakfast descend to the Mweka gate, where you receive your summit certificate and transfer to Moshi ending a truly remarkable journey.
