Itinerary

1. Day 1: Kilimanjaro Airport to Moshi

   • Arrive at Kilimanjaro Airport and meet your transfer driver.

   • Transfer to your hotel in Moshi.

   • Spend the rest of the day at leisure, relaxing at the hotel or exploring Moshi town by taxi.

   • Attend an evening briefing in preparation for the trek.

   Dinner and overnight in Moshi.

2. Day 2: Machame Gate (1,800m) to Machame Camp (2,832m)

   • Transfer from the hotel to Machame Gate after breakfast.

   • Complete registration and observe mountain crews preparing for their expeditions.

   • Begin the trek through lush rainforest with towering trees, primeval ferns, lianas, and lichens.

   • Spot black and white thumbless colobus monkeys along the route.

   • Arrive at Machame Camp, relax, and enjoy dinner.

   • Distance: 11 km

   • Hiking Time: 5 – 7 hours

   • Habitat: Rainforest

3. Day 3: Machame Camp (2,832m) to Shira Camp (3,750m)

   • Start early and trek into moorland and heath landscapes.

   • Enjoy expansive mountain views and reach the Shira Plateau.

   • Witness Kibo’s glacier glowing under the setting sun.

   • Distance: 5 km

   • Hiking Time: 4 – 6 hours

   • Habitat: Moorland

4. Day 4: Shira Camp (3,750m) to Lava Tower Hut (4,600m) to Barranco Camp (3,960m)

   • Climb gradually from the Shira Plateau to Lava Tower at 4,640m for acclimatization.

   • Descend into the scenic Barranco Valley, passing giant lobelias and senecios.

   • Arrive at Barranco Camp for dinner and overnight stay.

   • Distance: 10 km

   • Hiking Time: 6 – 8 hours

   • Habitat: Semi Desert

5. Day 5: Barranco Camp (3,950m) to Karanga Camp (3,995m)

   • Climb the steep Barranco Wall and enjoy panoramic views from the top.

   • Trek through ridges and valleys to Karanga Camp.

   • Dinner and overnight at Karanga Camp.

   • Distance: 5 km

   • Hiking Time: 4 – 5 hours

   • Habitat: Alpine Desert

6. Day 6: Karanga Camp (3,995m) to Barafu Camp (4,673m)

   • Trek through a barren alpine desert landscape to Barafu Camp.

   • Arrive in the early afternoon and rest before the summit attempt.

   • Have an early dinner and prepare for a midnight departure to Uhuru Peak.

   • Distance: 4 km

   • Hiking Time: 2 – 4 hours

   • Habitat: Alpine Desert

7. Day 7: Barafu Camp (4,673m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) to Mweka Camp (3,080m)

   • Begin the summit ascent at midnight, trekking up steep scree to Stella Point.

   • Continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, arriving at sunrise.

   • Spend time at the summit for photographs and celebration.

   • Descend to Barafu Camp for lunch, then continue to Mweka Camp.

   • Distance: 7 km ascent, 23 km descent

   • Hiking Time: 8 hours to the summit, 7 – 8 hours descent

   • Habitat: Stone Scree and Ice-capped Summit

8. Day 8: Mweka Camp (3,100m) to Mweka Gate (1,640m) to Moshi

   • Enjoy your final breakfast on the mountain.

   • Descend through rainforest to Mweka Gate, where the trail may be wet and muddy.

   • Complete park formalities and receive your climbing certificate.

   • Transfer back to your hotel in Moshi for a hot shower, dinner, and overnight stay.

   • Distance: 10 km

   • Hiking Time: 3 – 4 hours
