Day 01

Arusha to Mount Kilimanjaro via Marangu Gate

On the morning of your adventure, a friendly guide from the company will pick you up from your accommodation in Arusha. From there, drive for just over two hours to the foot of Kilimanjaro's southeast face.

To condense an epic ascent of Mount Kilimanjaro into an enjoyable day hike, begin your trek at Marangu Gate in Kilimanjaro National Park and venture as far as the first stop on the larger Marangu Route, Mandara Hut. This hike takes you from the mountain's lower slopes to about 2,700 meters in elevation, and the ascent from the emerald green of Kilimanjaro's scattered lowland farms to the exceptional beauty of its montane rainforest should take about three to four hours.

When you arrive at Mandara Hut, enjoy a packed lunch while watching trekkers coming and going on their ascents and descents of the mountain. After lunch, make a short side trip to Maundi Crater. From here, enjoy gobsmacking views of Kilimanjaro's two summits and an astounding panoramic vista of the African plains stretching all the way to Kenya.

After taking in the splendid scenery, descend the mountain using the same path followed in the morning. While retracing your steps, the rainforests of Kilimanjaro may still have a few surprises in store. As you trek beneath the shadowed canopy of leaves, stay on the lookout for sunbirds, butterflies, and even black-and-white colobus monkeys.

After a final few hours on the trail, return to Marangu Gate and drive back to Arusha.

  • Copy of travel and/or medical evacuation insurance
  • Personal medical/dental insurance cards
  • Credit card (Visa and MasterCard are widely accepted)

Essential Gear:

  • Binoculars
  • Camera and a good telephoto lens with a waterproof/dustproof bag
  • Sunglasses, preferably polarized
  • Hat for sun protection
  • Personal toiletries (soap, shampoo, conditioner, and lotion provided by some camps/lodges)
  • Hand sanitiser
  • Basic medical kit, malaria tablets, and prescription medications
  • Glasses (if you wear contacts)

  • Shirts (golf or T-shirts)
  • Lightweight long-sleeved shirts
  • Pair of shorts
  • Pairs of long pants
  • Swimsuit (if visiting Zanzibar Island or other water areas)
  • Undergarments and socks; women might consider a sports bra (for bouncy jeeps)
  • Sleepwear
  • Rain gear (if travelling during the rainy season March-May and Oct-Dec)
  • Please note: bright and white colours are not recommended for safari

General Packing Recommendations:

  • Bring sturdy, soft-sided luggage, which is easier to stow throughout the trip and carry in vehicles during transfers.
  • Carry any necessities, including travel documents, money, medications, and other vital supplies, in your carry-on bag, not in your checked luggage.
  • If you plan to lock your luggage, please use a TSA-approved security device.
  • Leave expensive jewellery at home! If you would be heartbroken to lose the item, don't bring it along.
  • Keep cash in more than one place.
  • A water-resistant daypack to carry cameras and other items is very handy while on game drives. Better yet, let this be your carry-on.
  • Please refrain from bringing hair dryers, irons, radios, and excess clothing or toiletries. All points of this trip are quite casual, and we recommend keeping luggage down to the basics. However, if any of these items are necessary for you, then please ask so we can check with the hotel first.

Baggage Allowance:

  • Please bring soft-sided luggage like duffel bags, not hard suitcases.
  • Charter flights within Tanzania strictly limit passengers to a total of 44 lbs, including carry-ons, so the key is to pack as light as possible.
  • Most properties provide laundry service at a cost to be paid directly unless mentioned otherwise during booking.
