The itinerary

1
Day 01

Arusha to Machame Gate and Rainforest Trek to Machame Camp

After breakfast, you will be driven for about 2 hours and 40 minutes from Arusha to Moshi town, and then continue to Machame Gate. Machame Gate is situated in the remote town of Machame at the southern foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro. The journey passes through the village of Machame, located on the lower slopes of the mountain.

We will begin the trek through the rainforest on a winding trail up the ridge. The trail can be muddy and slippery at times, so trekking poles are necessary. The trek continues ascending along the forest trails to Machame Camp at 2,980 m, where we will stay overnight. Dinner and overnight at Machame Camp - Full Board (FB).

2
Day 02

Machame Camp to Shira Camp through Heath and Moorland

After breakfast, we start the trek to Shira Camp, leaving the rainforest behind. This zone is known as the heath zone and is dominated by attractive lobelia plants. Various geological features can be seen here, ranging from lava tubes to glacial valleys.

The trek ascends broadly, crossing a small valley up to a steep rocky ridge. As we move forward, we enter the low alpine zone characterized by grasslands and moorlands. The route then leads west into the river gorge until we reach Shira Camp, where we will have dinner and stay overnight - FB.

3
Day 03

Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

This day's trek is a bit long and tough. We will ascend into the alpine desert towards the main peak of Kibo, where the western glacier becomes clearly visible. We will climb up to 3,950 m to the base of the Lava Tower, where you will have lunch for acclimatization.

Then, we will descend to Barranco Camp. The camp is situated in a valley below the Breach and the Great Barranco Wall, making it one of the most beautiful areas of the entire trail. Dinner and overnight at Barranco Camp - FB.

4
Day 04

Barranco Camp to Karanga Valley via Barranco Wall

After breakfast, we will experience a challenging climb to the top of Karanga Valley via the Barranco Wall. Barranco Wall requires skill, energy, and determination to complete. As the area toward Karanga Valley is steep, you may need to use all four limbs while climbing.

From this point, we will follow the trail that passes through many inclines and declines to Karanga Valley Camp. Dinner and overnight at Karanga Valley Camp - FB.

5
Day 05

Karanga Valley to Barafu Camp on the Southern Circuit

After breakfast, we proceed with the hike towards Barafu Camp. Leaving Karanga Camp in the morning, we shall pass a junction connecting with the Mweka trails and then continue up to Barafu Camp.

Reaching Barafu Camp marks the end of trekking in the southern circuit, offering views of the peak from numerous angles. While preparing for the next trek towards the summit, we shall have dinner and overnight at Barafu Camp - FB.

6
Day 06

Midnight Summit Trek to Uhuru Peak and Descent to Mweka Camp

As recommended, you will be woken up at around 11:30 PM and served tea and cookies. The activity that follows is the trek toward the summit between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. Trekking to the summit requires perseverance and steady forward momentum.

It takes about 8 hours to reach the top of the crater rim at Stella Point. From there, it is another 156 metres of altitude as you walk around the crater rim to Uhuru Peak. After reaching the summit of Kilimanjaro (5,895 m), take some time to relax and enjoy the view before starting the descent to Mweka Camp. Trekking poles will be needed to descend on loose scree to Mweka Camp. Dinner and overnight at Mweka Camp - FB.

7
Day 07

Descend to Mweka Gate and Transfer to Arusha

This is the final day of trekking on the Machame Route. We shall descend to Mweka Gate after breakfast. At the gate, you will be awarded a summit certificate from the park headquarters and sign out.

After receiving the certificate, you will be transferred by car to Arusha and then directly to the airport (JRO) for departure.

  • General Packing Recommendations:
    • Bring sturdy, soft-sided luggage, which is easier to stow throughout the trip and to carry in our vehicles during transfers
    • Carry any necessities, including travel documents, money, medications, and other vital supplies, in your carry-on bag, not your checked luggage
    • If you plan to lock your luggage, please use a TSA-approved security device
    • Leave expensive jewellery at home. If you would be heartbroken to lose the item, do not bring it along
    • Keep cash in more than one place
    • A water-resistant daypack to carry cameras and other items is very handy while on game drives. Better yet, let this be your carry-on
    • Please avoid bringing hair dryers, irons, radios, and excess clothing or toiletries. All points of this trip are quite casual, and we recommend keeping your luggage down to the basics. However, you can use them if you bring them along. If any of these items are necessary for you, please ask so we can check with the hotel first
  • Baggage Allowance:
    • Please bring soft-sided luggage like duffel bags, not hard suitcases. Charter flights within Tanzania strictly limit passengers to 44 lbs, including carry-ons, so the key is to pack as light as possible. Most properties provide laundry service at a cost to be paid directly unless it is mentioned on the booking
