Itinerary

One Day in the Heart of the Aeta of Pampanga Community
- 8:00 AM – Travel from Manila to Pampanga (approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes)
- 10:30 AM – Visit the schools attended by Aeta children (approximately 1 hour)
- 12:00 NN – Lunch (approximately 2 hours)
- 2:30 PM – Visit the Aeta community to learn about their culture and way of life (approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes)

Porac is home to several Aeta communities, an indigenous group with a deep history and unique culture.

The Aeta are one of the earliest inhabitants of the Philippines, and their ancestors are believed to have migrated to the islands around 40,000 years ago.

For centuries, Aeta communities were nomadic hunter-gatherers, living an egalitarian lifestyle in harmony with nature.

The eruption of Mount Pinatubo in 1991 was a pivotal and devastating event for the Aeta people, destroying their ancestral lands and forcing many to resettle in different areas, including in Porac.

This displacement significantly impacted their traditional way of life, pushing them to adapt to new livelihoods.

Aeta culture is deeply rooted in an intimate understanding of nature, and before the Pinatubo eruption, their survival and practices were closely connected to the resources of the mountains.

The Aeta have shown remarkable resilience in adapting to new circumstances, and after the eruption, many transitioned from hunting and gathering to agriculture and wage labor to survive.

They have a rich tradition of songs, dances, and arts. They use native instruments and materials for rituals and ceremonies and are skilled in weaving, making handicrafts, and crafting tools.

Historically, they have a strong sense of community and sharing, which can be seen in practices like sharing food with the entire village.

For many years, educating Aeta children was a challenge due to a lack of interest or resources.

Some Aeta communities, with the help of organizations, have established their own indigenous educational institutions that focus on indigenous knowledge, models, and content, often run by Aeta teachers.

Institutions have also made college education more accessible to Aeta students through partnerships and financial assistance.

Education is seen as a key to breaking the cycle of poverty and empowering the Aeta youth to thrive in a changing world while also preserving their cultural identity.
