Itinerary
-
Day 1 : Mombasa to Malindi – Earth, Stone & Sea
- Morning: Depart Mombasa, leaving the bustling island city behind. Journey north along the coastal road, a vibrant tapestry of baobabs, coconut plantations, and roadside life.
- Afternoon: Turn inland to the dramatic Marafa Depression (Hell's Kitchen). Wander the edge of these sculpted sandstone canyons, their colors shifting from cream to ochre to deep crimson in the afternoon light—a stunning geological therapy.
- Evening: Arrive in Malindi. Visit the ancient Vasco Da Gama Pillar, then settle at a beachfront restaurant. Dine with your feet in the sand, listening to the rhythmic Indian Ocean, a perfect reset.
-
Day 2 : Malindi to Lamu – Depths of the Blue & The Archipelago
- Morning: Embark on a boat ride in Watamu Marine National Park. Glide over coral gardens, snorkel amidst rainbow fish, and feel the profound serenity of floating in the warm, turquoise sea.
- Afternoon: Drive north to the jetty, then transfer to a traditional wooden boat for the journey to Lamu Island. Arrive as the golden light bathes the seafront.
- Evening: A gentle stroll leads to the Lamu Museum for an introduction to Swahili history. Rest for the night to the sound of dhows creaking in the harbour.
-
Day 3 : Lamu – The Living Stone Town
- Morning: With a native guide, lose yourself in the labyrinth of Lamu Old Town. Feel the centuries underfoot, visit ancient houses and forts, and understand this UNESCO site as a living, breathing community.
- Late Morning: Experience the island’s gentle pace from a new vantage point—the back of a donkey, Lamu’s main transport. It’s a journey of smiles and simplicity.
- Afternoon: After a Swahili lunch heavy with coconut and spice, bid farewell to Lamu and return by boat to the mainland. Drive back to Malindi for the night.
-
Day 4 : Malindi – Forest Whispers & Desert Dunes
- Morning: Explore the mystical Gede Ruins, a 13th-century Swahili city reclaimed by the forest. Walk silently among the moss-covered walls and grand arches, a place of palpable history and peace.
- Afternoon: Enter the dense, green world of Arabuko Sokoke Forest. On a guided hike, seek out rare birdlife and, with luck, the gentle footsteps of elephant herds. Later, contrast this with the vast, windswept beauty of the Mambrui Sand Dunes.
- Evening: Reflect on the day’s contrasts over a quiet dinner in Malindi.
-
Day 5 : Malindi to Nyali (Mombasa) – Rivers, Ruins & The Cave
