Itinerary
-
Day 1: Nairobi to Ngare Ndare Forest to Archers Post
- Morning: Depart Nairobi early, heading north on the A2. Enjoy views of Mount Kenya before turning off for Ngare Ndare Forest. Arrive at the canopy of ancient cedar trees, a hidden gem at the foot of the mountain.
- Afternoon: Embark on a guided walk through the indigenous forest to the series of stunning, turquoise-blue pools. Take the exhilarating canopy walkway, 30 feet above the forest floor, and for the brave, a guided swim in the crystal-clear, icy waters. Keep an eye out for elephants, buffalo, and diverse birdlife.
- Evening: Continue north to the arid lowlands, arriving at your lodge or camp near Archers Post in the Samburu region. Settle in as the sun sets, painting the landscape in brilliant oranges and reds. Dinner under a blanket of incredible stars.
-
Day 2: Samburu National Reserve – Full Day Safari
- Full Day: An early start for a full day of exploration in Samburu National Reserve. This arid ecosystem, bisected by the life-giving Ewaso Ng'iro River, is home to the "Samburu Special Five": the reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, beisa oryx, gerenuk, and Somali ostrich. Search for lions, leopards, and elephants adapted to the dry environment. Enjoy a picnic lunch at a scenic spot along the river, watching crocodiles bask and elephants bathe.
- Evening: Return to your lodge, exhilarated. Share stories of the day's sightings over a sundowner and a delicious dinner.
-
Day 3: Buffalo Springs and Shaba National Reserves
- Morning: Cross the river to explore Buffalo Springs National Reserve. Named after the clear oasis at its heart, the landscape here is similar to Samburu but offers its own unique vistas and wildlife dynamics. Visit the springs themselves, a vital water source.
- Afternoon: Venture into the more rugged and rocky terrain of Shaba National Reserve. Famous as the setting for Joy Adamson's work, Shaba has a wild, untouched feel. Look for the rare Williams' lark and perhaps spot a leopard draped over a kopje. The dramatic scenery of hills, springs, and riverine forest is a photographer's dream.
- Evening: A final celebratory dinner at your lodge, reflecting on the diversity of the three sister reserves.
-
Day 4: Archers Post to Namunyak Conservancy – Homestay Immersion
- Morning: After a leisurely breakfast, bid farewell to Samburu and journey eastwards towards the Mathews Mountains. The drive itself is spectacular, entering the domain of the Samburu people.
- Afternoon: Arrive at your homestay in Namunyak Conservancy. Be warmly welcomed by your host family. This is a true cultural immersion. Settle into your simple, comfortable accommodation and enjoy a traditional lunch.
- Evening: Spend the late afternoon learning about daily life. You might help with herding, fetch water, or simply sit and share stories. As dusk falls, enjoy a meal prepared together over an open fire, listening to the sounds of the conservancy night.
-
Day 5: Rereti Wildlife Conservancy and The Sliding Rocks
- Morning: Explore the Rereti Community Wildlife Conservancy, part of the Namunyak ecosystem. This is community conservation in action. A guided walk with local scouts offers an intimate ground-level perspective - tracking wildlife, identifying medicinal plants, and understanding the delicate balance between people and nature.
- Afternoon: Visit the famous "Sliding Rocks" (Sirima) on the Milgis Lugga. This natural rock formation, smoothed by water over millennia, creates a series of natural water slides and pools - a magical spot to cool off and play in the water, deeply embedded in local lore.
- Evening: Return to your homestay. The evening is yours to deepen connections, perhaps learning a few words of the Samburu language or listening to elders share ancient stories and songs.
-
Day 6: The Mathews Mountains (Lolokwe or Ol Doinyo Lenkiyo)
- Morning: Today is dedicated to the majestic Mathews Range (also known as the Lenkiyio Hills). Your hosts will guide you on a hike into these sacred mountains. A popular objective is the steep, table-top mountain of Lolokwe, offering a challenging but rewarding climb with phenomenal 360-degree views.
- Afternoon: Enjoy a picnic lunch at a viewpoint, looking out over the vast conservancy lands below. The forested slopes are home to elephants, buffalo, and rare birds, a vital water tower for the region.
- Evening: Your final homestay dinner will feel like a farewell among friends. Reflect on the profound difference between observing a landscape and living in it, even for a short time.
-
Day 7: Namunyak to Nairobi – Journey's End
- Morning: After a heartfelt goodbye to your host family, begin the long but scenic journey back to Nairobi. The route takes you through Isiolo and Nanyuki, with final views of Mount Kenya.
- Afternoon: Stop for lunch en route, already reminiscing about the vivid contrasts of your trip-from forest pools to desert rivers, and from luxury lodges to the warmth of a manyatta.
- Evening: Arrive in Nairobi in the early evening, carrying with you the deep satisfaction of a journey that touched both wilderness and the human heart.
