Itinerary
-
Journey Through History, Nature, and Culture
- South Stack Lighthouse: Visit the location of South Stack Lighthouse. Walk part down the zig-zag steps leading to the lighthouse. Walk along the spectacular 400-foot sea cliffs and see the bird colonies (seasonal). Visit the site of an ancient hut circle village.
- The Beach at Trearddur: Possibly one of the finest beaches anywhere - a brief tour of the village and beachfront and a stop for coffee.
- Barchlodfau y Gawres (The Giantess's Apronful): A burial chamber dating back over 5000 years. It is one of only 2 in the United Kingdom which displays Celtic artwork. Seen from the roadside - optional walk to site possible subject to timescales.
- Saint Cwyfan's Church: View an ancient church steeped in history marooned on a tiny islet.
- Aberffraw is the ancient site of the Welsh Princes Palace, dating back to the 9th century.
- Eglwys Lllangadwaladr Church: Church which houses the 6th-century stone of King Cadfan - perhaps the earliest example of a Celtic Christian cross. Also, the location of a 15th-century stained glass window commemorates a son's return from the Battle of Bosworth. Saint Cadwaladr's emblem was the red dragon, which today is the national flag of Wales.
- Bryn Celli Ddu: The 5000-year-old burial chamber and mound are astronomically aligned with the summer solstice. It is a mystical location with Celtic artwork examples whose name means "Hill of the Dark Grove". The village has a very, very long name. A stop at Llanfairpwllgwyngyll. A large store selling souvenirs of your trip to Anglesey and Wales. Photo stop at the Menai Suspension Bridge Iconic image of Anglesey - photo opportunity of the Menai Straits. The first-ever suspension bridge in the world was built in 1826 and is still going strong. Also, the Britannia Bridge was built in 1850 and reconstructed in the 1970s following a fire disaster.
- Beaumaris: UNESCO World Heritage Site of King Edward 1st Castle (entry optional). Early 19th-century gaol (entry optional) 17th-century courthouse (entry optional). Church of St. Mary's has excellent independent shops and taverns. Lunch before returning to Holyhead or the preferred pick-up location.
