Day Tour to Alexandria
- Get picked up at 7 am and head to Alexandria from Cairo driving on the "Alex Desert Road" Alexandria was the second capital of Egypt during the Greco Roman time. It was established by the great army leader Alexander the Great in 332 BC when he conquered Egypt. The main purpose of the construction was to be a training center for the Macedonian army.
- Visit one of the most important necropoleis during the Greco Roman period, the Catacombs of Kom El Shoqafa located to the south part of Alexandria, combining Hellenistic and Egyptian styles. These unique catacombs were found by a coincidence after a cart with a donkey sank into a deep hole.
- Check out Pompey's Pillar dating back to the reign of Emperor Diocletian. The people of Alexandria erected this pillar to thank him after he gave free grains to the famine-stricken inhabitants.
- Head to Qaitbay Citadel. It's a little bit away from the mentioned sites. The construction of the citadel dates back to the middle ages during the reign of Sultan Qaitbay in 1480 AD, and the purpose of the construction was to protect the city from the ottoman empire attack.
- After that, visit the new Bibliotheca Alexandria just 200 meters from the site of the Old library. The rebuilding cost 220 million dollars.
- Return to your hotel.
