• Meet your guide at Tsar Ivan Asen I Square, in front of the main entrance to Tsarevets Fortress.
• Walk down into the historic Asenova Mahala, one of Veliko Tarnovo's most picturesque and authentic neighborhoods.
• Pass by the Church of the Holy Forty Martyrs, one of the most important monuments of medieval Bulgaria.
• Continue past the Church of the Holy Mother of God, learning about the religious heritage of medieval Tarnovo.
• Cross the charming Vladishki (Bishop's) Bridge, a perfect spot for memorable photographs of the Yantra River and the surrounding hills.
• Pass by the Church of St. Demetrius, where the uprising of 1185 began, leading to the restoration of the Bulgarian state and the rise of Tarnovo as a medieval capital.
• Ascend Trapezitsa Hill, the second fortified hill of medieval Tarnovo and home to noble residences and numerous churches.

Funicular railway ticket to Trapezitsa Hill (€5.11 round trip per adult when the funicular is operating). Please note: Reduced admission rates may apply for children, students, seniors, and families. The funicular is occasionally out of service due to technical or operational reasons

Know Before You Go

This is a walking tour involving moderate physical activity.

The route includes cobblestone streets, uneven surfaces, and steep sections.

Comfortable walking shoes are strongly recommended.

The tour is not wheelchair accessible.

The tour is not suitable for strollers or baby carriages.

Participants should be comfortable walking on uneven terrain and moderate to steep inclines.

A funicular railway is available for access to Trapezitsa Hill, but its operation is not guaranteed and may occasionally be suspended due to technical or operational reasons.

Please note that the funicular ticket is not included in the tour price.

When the funicular is not operating, access to Trapezitsa Hill is via a relatively steep uphill road.

This tour includes a visit to Trapezitsa Hill, whose opening hours vary by season. The last admission is one hour before the site's closing time, and tour start times may be adjusted accordingly.

Please note that Trapezitsa is closed to visitors during part of the winter season. The site is scheduled to be closed from December 1 to March 31.

If Trapezitsa is closed or access is restricted due to weather conditions, maintenance works, or official regulations, the itinerary may be modified accordingly.

The itinerary may also be adjusted due to local events or site regulations.

Meeting Point

The standard meeting point is Tsar Ivan Asen I Square, directly in front of the main entrance to Tsarevets Fortress. Alternatively, by prior arrangement, I can meet you at your hotel in Veliko Tarnovo and accompany you to the starting point of the tour using local public transportation. Please note that no private transportation is provided.
