Embark on a unique trekking experience on the icy slopes of the Perito Moreno Glacier in Argentina. Learn about glaciology and the Perito Moreno Glacier before setting out on a mini trek across the ice. The itinerary

Day 01

Mini Trek on Perito Moreno Glacier

  • Pick up at the agreed meeting point in El Calafate. During the journey, information about the area, the glacier, and the excursion will be provided through audio guides in Spanish, English, and Portuguese on comfortable buses.
  • Once at the "Bajo de las Sombras" port (Route 11, km 70.9), embark to cross Lake Rico, arriving at the opposite shore after approximately 20 minutes of navigation in front of the south face of the Perito Moreno Glacier.
  • Upon disembarking, you will be greeted by the mountain guides, who will lead you to a refuge equipped with sanitary facilities.
  • From there, a short walk begins along the lakeshore, including a talk about glaciology in general and the Perito Moreno Glacier in particular.
  • Upon reaching the glacier's edge, you will be divided into groups of up to 20 people and fitted with crampons and helmets. Once on the ice, you will receive a brief safety briefing before beginning the hike.
  • With the help of the mountain guides, you will enjoy this natural paradise of ice at all times. The walk is of medium difficulty and includes many ups and downs. The glacier trek lasts approximately an hour and a half, during which you will be able to appreciate a variety of typical glacier formations, such as cracks, sinkholes, seracs, lagoons, and more.
  • At the end of the walk on the ice, return to the refuge via a footbridge that crosses the exuberant Patagonian Andean forest.
  • Embark once again to return to the port and observe the glacier walls.

What to bring

  • Clothing: It is advisable to wear comfortable shoes, ideally trekking shoes, and warm clothes such as sweaters, sweatshirts, windbreakers, and waterproof jackets. Bring sunglasses, protective cream, and gloves. Also bring a hat for the sun or a coat if it is icy.
  • Lunch: Bring food to eat at the forest shelter when you get off the ice. There is not enough time to have lunch at the Las Pasarelas restaurant.

Know before you go

  • Consider:
    • Of medium physical demand, suitable exclusively for people from 10 to 65 years old.
    • Not suitable for overweight people, pregnant women, or people with any degree of physical or mental disability that affects attention, walking, or coordination. It is also not suitable for people who suffer from central or peripheral cardiovascular diseases, whose cardiac or vascular capacities are diminished, or who use stents, bypasses, pacemakers, or other prostheses - for example, those taking anticoagulant medications or with grade III varicose veins (thick and multiple).
    • People who suffer from diseases caused by respiratory disabilities (COPD, asthma, emphysema, etc.).
    • The excursion includes a one-hour guided visit to the footbridges of the Perito Moreno Glacier, 7 km from the port. You can enjoy the spectacular panoramic view of the glacier and walk one of the self-guided trails there. The Minitrekking is aimed at people who enjoy nature and adventure and want to live the experience of walking on the ice of the most beautiful glacier in the world.
