Description
Deep in the Dubai desert sands at Al Marmoom Camel Racetrack, you can find a modern-day version of the old tradition of camel racing. A pastime that originated in the region, it still has a whole community of avid local followers. Dubai’s biggest camel racetrack is next to Al Marmoom Heritage Village and the Al Lisaili area.
From the grandstand, you can be a part of this heart-pumping, crowd-cheering sport that has been integral to Emirati life for centuries. Once the gates open, the race is on, and so is an experience like no other. Watch as 60 camels flood from the gates, legs flying in all directions, making their way as fast as they can down the track. Trainers and owners follow in 4X4s, controlling the robot jockeys atop each camel by remote and egging their camels to the finish line via loudspeakers.
**IMP: Camel Racetrack is open to tourists however camel race is happening as per the schedule only. Please check the racing schedule, if you wish to see the camel race.
Take in waterfront views of the beautiful desert sunset. This is one part of Dubai where wildlife is likely to be seen in its natural habitat, from desert foxes to the oryx, or one of 170 bird species living around the lakes. Just a few of the species include swans, geese, ducks, flamingos, and more. Some of these native birds are on the endangered list, such as the steppe eagle and the Asian houbara.
To add a touch of romance to your day, head to the nearby Love Lake. Just minutes from Al Qudra Lakes, this artificial waterscape is shaped to resemble two intertwined hearts and is a truly atmospheric place to spend time – and take photos – with a loved one.
When the night begins to fall, the lakes are the backdrop for some truly spectacular sunsets. As red skies reflect the tranquil waters, the birds get ready to nest, as do Dubai’s more adventurous locals, lured into camping overnight by the peaceful atmosphere. Once the sun sets, look up before you leave – the skies here are entirely unpolluted by traffic or light, meaning you’ll spot twinkling stars and complex constellations with ease.
