GREAT SERENGETI MIGRATION SAFARI HOLIDAYS
The great Serengeti migration occurs in Serengeti National Park. This is the wonderful movement of a vast number of the Serengeti’s wildebeests accompanied by a large number of zebra and Thomson’s gazelle as well as a smaller number of Grant’s gazelle, eland, and impala across Northern Tanzania and entered Kenya. These animals move in an annual pattern that is fairly predictable. The annual migration of giant herds of grazers is a truly spectacular event. Over two million of the mentioned animals collectively move through the Serengeti and Masai Mara ecosystems in regular patterns to search for green pasture depending on the weather on vegetation shifting. This is for sure, one of the greatest wonders of the natural world just experienced in Tanzania only – the Serengeti Migration.
As the Serengeti Migration event occurred in an annual pattern, Travelers and tourists will be in the position to see the Great Migration in Tanzania all year round in different locations depending on vegetation shift and get followed by herbs and herbs are followed by carnivores and the carnivores followed by the entire ecosystem path. This giant herd migrates typically in a circular motion clockwise from the Serengeti National Park. It then moves to Masai Mara, then Ngorongoro and finally comes back to Serengeti National Park when the pattern starts again. The Great Serengeti Migration is quite rare in the Masai Mara Kenya; the herds only ever venture there as an extension of their grazing –grasslands from the northern point of Tanzania if they need to for more fresh pastures. Migration in Kenya can only be found within a few months of the year when herbs head towards the border, and even then, most of the herds are still grazing around the northern parts of the Serengeti anyway. As this is an ongoing event, it is easier to sport out where the wildebeest usually will be at different times of the year.
THE ANNUAL SERENGETI MIGRATION OVERVIEW:
The best times to visit The Serengeti Migration in Tanzania is as shown here below:
From July to October:
This is when the wildebeests are in the northern Serengeti plains consuming green pastures while moving in the north direction heading to Kenya. During this time, you will have a chance to see up to thousands of herms crossing the great Mara River. As the sight of the wildebeest crossing is so dramatic, it is considered by many tourists and travellers that being the most desirable time to see the migration openly.
From December to March:
This is another time when wildebeest are in the southern area of the Serengeti. This place is specifically known as the Ndutu area, which is actually situated in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The time from December to March is the special time for calving. Alongside the river crossings, this is an absolute best part of the wildebeest’s journey and a wonderful time to see the herds congregate on the dramatic sweeping plains of the south. February is a specific time of year when you will almost guarantee to see the big herds all together heading to the southern part of the migration pattern purposely for calving season.
The rest time of the year: From November, April, May to June
The migration is in between locations because of plenty of vegetation around that range, and as such, these months are slightly transitional times to see the herds. This fact behaves that way because, in November, the place experiences short rains while in April and May are long rains, so the grasses are green in these months across the entire Serengeti. This fact courses the wildebeest to be more dispersed than in the prime time of July – October as well as from December – March. At this time, you will not get many of those condensed big herds which people get excited about.
WHY DO THE WILDEBEEST MIGRATE?
The wildebeest migrate – Serengeti Migration – around the Serengeti National Park and move into the Masai Mara for the solitary purpose of following the rainfall as a source of green vegetation. Once places are sure of having enough grasses, herbs are psychological senses to multiply. As they move long defined vegetation patterns, they also cross and multiply in number. For their calving season from December – March, they always begin their cycle in the Southern Serengeti at an area called Ndutu and follow wherever the grass is greener and stop on plenty of vegetation. This movement can be tracked by tour experts by having a good idea of spotting where the wildebeest should be at any given time of year. This really depends on where the rain falls. They often move on a zigzag path along the way, which sometimes make it impossible to predict where the big herds are at a given time. The wildebeest are disreputably unreliable as although they generally all head from south parts to north sides of Serengeti and back around again after completing the circle.
THE STYLE OF THE WILDEBEEST MIGRATION
This herb migration undertaken by the wildebeest is an annual event that sees one and a half million wildebeest accompanied by hundreds of thousands of zebras and numerous other antelope species as they search for greener pastures. The animals establish and follow a clockwise movement through the Serengeti National Park following the rains for the lushest of grass. In a movement of more than five hundred kilometres, groups of herbs migrating meet with many dangerous predators such as lions, cheetahs, and crocodiles preying on the animals. It is a truly amazing spectacle.
WHEN DOES THE GREAT SERENGETI MIGRATION HAPPEN IN BOTH AREAS – IN SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK, TANZANIA, AND IN MASAI MARA, KENYA?

The place between Kogatende and the Lamai wedge is the land between the Mara River and the border to Kenya. The herds sometimes cross the Mara River from one side of the Masai Mara to the other sides – all in Kenya). So the most famous river crossings by herbs are most likely to be seen in Tanzania.
