Old imperial cities with plenty of history and character

Marrakech, Fes, Meknes, and Rabat are Morocco's four imperial cities. Rabat is the country's current capital. Although it appears to be a contemporary city at first glance, it contains various historical attractions worth seeing, including the Kasbah of the Oudaias, the medieval medina, and the Hassan Tower. The dazzling Royal Mausoleum is also a must-see.

Marrakech, also known as the Red City, is well-known for its historic medina, numerous souks, ancient palaces such as Badi Palace and Bahia Palace, the magnificent Koutoubia Mosque, the lively Djemaa el-Fna, and the Saadian Tombs. The historic capital of Fes has some gorgeous architecture, but it is arguably best known for its vast tanneries and housing one of the world's oldest colleges. Meknes is home to one of the most impressive sites, Bab Al Mansour...Bab el-Mansour is one of Morocco's most spectacular historic gates, and horse-drawn carriages are a terrific way to explore this quaint and peaceful imperial city.

Morocco is known for being one of the most tolerant of the Arab nations. The country is relatively safe, peaceful and stable. Moroccan people, both Arabic and Berber, are also noted for their warm hospitality and friendly nature. Tourists may receive curious looks in areas with few visitors, which is often followed by cheery waves and attempts to strike up a conversation. As a former French colony, French is widely spoken. In popular tourist areas, English is commonly spoken too. Communication is rarely a problem for visitors.
