The Usambara Mountains is a mountain range in  north-eastern Tanzania, within the Lushoto District of the Tanga Region, in tropical eastern Africa. The range is approximately 90 kilometers (56mi) long and about half that wide. The rock is of Precambrian metamorphic origin, and the mountains were formed nearly two million years ago by faulting and uplifting. They are split into two sub-ranges; the West Usambara are higher and the East Usambara are closer to the coast and receives more rainfall.

The mountains are clad in virgin tropical rainforest which has been isolated for a long period and they are a center of endemism. Historically they were inhabited by Bantu,Shambaa, and Maasai people but in the eighteenth century, a Shambaa kingdom was founded by Mbegha. The kingdom eventually fell apart after a succession struggle in 1862. German colonists settled in the area which was to become German East Africa, and after World War I became part of the British mandated territory of Tanganyika.

Health Advice and What to Bring for Usambara

The Usambara mountains range from 1400m to 2400m above the sea level, so as you go up and down and jungles during trekking, it is better to have at least good hiking shoes to avoid slipps and grass scratches. During a hike you also need to have sun creams for protection. Also sometimes in the mountains, it is a bit cold and might rain; so you need some clothes that are suitable for the weather. We can arrange these for you if you don't have them with you.

Malaria presence is not strong in the Usambara mountains but, as we expect to pass some other regions in Tanzania, is better to prevent by using adequate procedures.
