Many travelers get confused by the term Jungfrau. Here’s a simple guide:

  • Jungfrau Region: a scenic area with charming villages and resorts like Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, and Wengen.

  • Jungfrau Peak: the 4,158 m summit that dominates the skyline.

  • Jungfraujoch: Europe’s highest railway station at 3,454 m, also called the “Top of Europe.”

In German, “Joch” means a mountain pass or saddle – the point between two peaks or two valleys. In Jungfraujoch, it refers to the pass between the Mönch and Jungfrau mountains. So the name roughly translates to “Jungfrau Pass.”

In short: when you see “joch” in mountain names, it usually signals a high crossing or pass between peaks.
