Mt Kilimanjaro
Mt Kilimanjaro is a volcanic mountain. Kilimanjaro is the highest peak of all in Africa and a free standing mountain. The peak has a height of 5895m. The mountain itself is divided into five zone; The cultivated,moorland and heath,desert and summit zones. This article tells about the mountain in Tanzania.
Kilimanjaro has 3 peaks, The Kibo peak, the main peak (5895m) which is the last to cool down during the volcanic eruption, Mawenzi peak (5145m) the second to cool down and Shira peak (3895m) the first to cool down.
Anybody strong and physically fit can climb Mt Kilimanjaro. There are several trails leading to the summit of this mountain.
Marangu ( the coca cola ) it is the only route which offers hut (lodge acomodation). The rest, Machame ( whiskey route), Lemosho, Umbwe, rongai and shira are camping routes. Mweka it is the only route leading down.
Mount Meru
Mount Meru is the second highest peak in Tanzania, The mountain has 2 peaks, the big Meru peak 4565m and the little Meru peak 3835m. It offers a hut ( lodge reservation) and no camping.
The trek can be completed within 3 to 4 days. Trekking Mt meru can be included as a part of acclimatization before Mt Kilimanjaro. The trek takes between 5,6,7 and 8 days above.
Oldoinyo Lengai
Oldoinyo Lengai is the only active volcanic peak in Tanzania; the last eruption was 2007. The peak is near the lake Natron which is the home of thousands of flamingoes. Water fall tour and lake natron tour can be optional activities but it is possible to do both.
There are other attractive peaks in Tanzania, like Usambara 3200m, Mt Hanang,Longido and Monduli. These can be a part of a days tour hike or 2 days hike only.
