01. PURPLE SWAMPHEN

Purple Swamphen, locally known as Kithala, is a very common and easily spottable bird in wetlands in Colombo. This hen-sized bird has long legs, distinctive sheeny purple colored wings, and a reddish bill.


02. GREEN IMPERIAL PIGEON

This spectacular large pigeon lives in forest canopies, feeding mainly on fruits. This bird can be spotted in forest patches in Colombo, in particular, during the fruiting season. Green Imperial Pigeon catches your eye because of the metallic green back, wings, and tails.


03. ASIAN PARADISE FLYCATCHER

Ceylon Paradise Flycatcher is a subspecies of Indian Paradise Flycatcher. This bird is known to have distinctive aerodynamic capabilities, supported by a slender body and a long tail, to catch insects in flight. Ceylon Paradise Flycatchers have chestnut upper part and a black head and can be spotted in dry, lower land forest patches in Colombo.


04. BLUE TAILED BEE EATER

This is another colorful spectacle among Sri Lankan birds. There are four Bee-eater species in Sri Lanka, and Blue Tailed Bee Eater is the largest and more distinctively has a central tail feathers. The bird is predominantly green and has black eye stripes, blue cheeks and a yellow chin.


05. PHEASANT TAILED JACANA

This is a wader bird with unique wide feet and claws which let them walk on floating vegetation. This is the only Jacana with breeding plumage. During breeding plumage, the body turns blackish and becomes long. In non-breeding plumage, the upper parts turns greenish brown and underparts white.


06. JERDON'S LEAFBIRD

This is another colorful bird found in woodlands of Colombo. Both the male and female Jerdon’s Leafbirds are predominantly green. The only noticeable color difference is, female has a blue throat, while the male has a black throat.


07. PIED KINGFISHER

Pied Kingfishers are locally known as River Kingfisher, since they are spotted flying up and down rivers in lower wetlands. With a black and white plumage, this bird is distinctively different from all the other 7 kingfisher species in Sri Lanka.
