Begin your Kamakura journey at the majestic Kotoku-in, home to the iconic Great Buddha. This impressive 13-meter bronze statue, cast in the 13th century, has stood serenely through centuries of history and is one of Japan’s most unforgettable cultural landmarks. Surrounded by peaceful temple grounds, it’s the perfect introduction to Kamakura’s timeless atmosphere.

Next, make your way to the enchanting Hase-dera. Known for its seasonal beauty, this hillside temple features lush gardens, sweeping ocean views, and the famous eleven-headed wooden Kannon statue. During hydrangea season, the temple paths transform into a vibrant sea of flowers, creating one of Kamakura’s most photogenic scenes.

Continue onward to the hidden gem of Zeniarai Benzaiten Ugafuku Shrine, tucked inside a peaceful cave sanctuary. Here, visitors take part in the unique tradition of washing money in sacred spring water, said to bring prosperity and good fortune.

After a morning of temple hopping, enjoy a relaxing lunch and stroll along Komachi Street, Kamakura’s lively shopping and food street. Explore charming cafés, local boutiques, and souvenir shops while sampling regional specialties. Be sure to try a fresh namashirasu-don (raw whitebait rice bowl) and indulge in delicious matcha sweets for the perfect local flavor experience.

In the afternoon, visit the grand Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, Kamakura’s most important Shinto shrine. Set at the end of a beautiful approach lined with trees and traditional architecture, the shrine’s spacious grounds and tranquil ponds offer a peaceful glimpse into Japan’s spiritual heritage.

Then escape into the tranquility of Hokoku-ji, often called the Bamboo Temple. Wander through its serene bamboo grove where towering green stalks sway gently in the breeze. Here, enjoy a traditional bamboo matcha experience — sip freshly prepared matcha tea while overlooking the bamboo garden from the peaceful tea house, an unforgettable moment of calm and reflection unique to Kamakura.

End your day with a refreshing seaside walk at Yuigahama Beach. Watch the waves roll in, enjoy the ocean breeze, and unwind at a cozy beachside café with tea or dessert as the sun begins to set — the perfect finale to a day filled with culture, history, and natural beauty.
