Ask anyone where they’d like to be taken on a date and at least 60% of them will be quick to tell you about a new fancy hotel in town that has an imported from France or something. “Their active cooking sessions are so lit, you want to drool at the chef,” they would say. An evening with high heels and tuxedos, and Kidum /The Ben music playing from the newly installed Bose speakers. How about that?

Dear future boyfriend/husband, I hereby save you the tuxedo drama. Allow me to introduce you to the gem of the city, Rebero. If you haven’t been to Rebero after 6m, you have no right-thinking you enjoy this town.

I’ll paint you a picture of this gemstone.

Imagine a night boat cruise on the ocean. This boat has live music, for music lovers and it’s playing a chill African vibe. The boat has a few people, but it isn’t crowded. There’s breathing space and all. The night is setting in so the sun is disappearing over the horizons, leaving a dreamy reflection on the blue water. Minutes later, someone blows fireworks from the mainland because who waits for new year’s eve for fireworks? People that live by the ocean play fireworks when they want. Could be someone’s birthday or perhaps the pet dog had a puppy.

Now close your eyes, and insert a million lights a few kilometres below from you.

Twitching and shining before your eyes will be the well-lit streets of the city. With cars driving by, adding to the movement of the light before you.

It doesn’t matter what is going on in my heart. Happy? Sad? Lost? Wishful? Rebero is my ultimate escape in Kigali. With the beautiful lights setting in from a distance, I often take my baby (my saxophone) and find a spot at a pavement. The streets in this neighbourhood are mostly empty so there is usually a bunch of courageous people working out while starring at the city lights. It’s so serene that everyone works out in silence and utter concentration.

By the pavement I sit normally, is a bush that has crickets chirping, with a cool evening breeze going through the plants (bush) near my feet. Combine this with the soft melodies coming out of my saxophone, or any saxophone for that matter- and voila! The perfect date!
