The park occupies the former British colonial Polo Grounds—an iconic site where Kwame Nkrumah declared Ghana’s independence from Britain on March 6, 1957, during the historic Ghana Independence Declaration 1957. This moment marked Ghana as the first sub-Saharan African nation to gain independence from colonial rule, inspiring liberation movements across the continent.
Known as Osagyefo (The Redeemer), Nkrumah dedicated his life to African unity and liberation. After his passing in 1972, his remains were moved several times before finally resting at this memorial site. The park was officially opened to the public in 1992 by Jerry John Rawlings. Designed by Ghanaian architect Don Arthur, the five-acre park blends Byzantine influences with traditional Ghanaian architectural elements.
Key Features
At the center of the park stands the iconic mausoleum, which houses the remains of Kwame Nkrumah and his wife Fathia Nkrumah. The striking structure resembles an inverted sword—an African symbol of peace. Surrounding it are beautifully landscaped gardens, reflecting pools, and statues representing traditional Asante elephant-horn blowers.
An adjacent museum offers a deeper look into Nkrumah’s life and vision. Visitors can see personal artifacts including his independence-day smock, desk, photographs, and historical documents that highlight his leadership and commitment to Pan-Africanism.
Recent Developments
After years of deterioration, the park underwent a major renovation and was reopened in July 2023 by Nana Akufo-Addo. The revitalized site now attracts nearly 100,000 visitors annually and continues to host national ceremonies and cultural events celebrating Ghana’s rich history.
