When people hear about Meteora, they usually think about the famous monasteries on the top of the rocks. But very few visitors know there is another secret world hidden inside the forest: the old hermitages.

This area feels like a movie. Giant stone pillars rise from the earth like sleeping giants. Small caves and tiny wooden shelters hide between the rocks. Birds fly above your head, and the forest smells like pine trees and fresh mountain air. Sometimes the silence is so deep you can hear only your own steps… and maybe your stomach asking for lunch.

The paths around the hermitages are beautiful and peaceful. We walk through forest trails, old stone steps, and narrow passages between the huge rocks. Every turn gives a new surprise: a hidden cave, an incredible view, or a rock that looks like a dinosaur. Nature here is wild, magical, and full of energy.

Many centuries ago, hermits came to Meteora searching for silence and God. These men lived alone inside caves or tiny shelters hanging on the cliffs. Their life was very hard and austere. No electricity, no internet, no coffee freddo! Only prayer, fasting, meditation, and complete dedication to their faith.

Some hermits climbed the rocks with ropes and wooden ladders. Others stayed for years without going down to the village. Winter was cold, summer was hot, but they believed this difficult life brought them closer to heaven. Today, when we see these impossible places, we all ask the same question: “How did they survive here?”

During my guided tours, I love sharing these stories with visitors. I do not only explain history. I help people feel the spirit of Meteora. We walk slowly, enjoy the forest, listen to the silence, and discover hidden corners far away from the crowds.

Of course, we also stop for photos because if you do not take a photo in Meteora, did you really come here?

I always try to make the day fun, relaxed, and unforgettable. We laugh, we explore, we learn, and sometimes we even feel like modern hermits for a few minutes — until somebody checks their phone again.

The hermitages of Meteora are not only old caves on the rocks. They are stories of courage, faith, solitude, and human strength. Visiting them is a special experience that stays in your heart long after the walk finishes.
