In Djanet, time, distance and money are not so important for many locals. There is no specific economy here. Our grandparents counted on agriculture, goat's milk, camel meat, dates and cereals to make up for a source of living. But nowadays, everything is available in the markets. At Edjario river bed, there is a lively market where local people trade their wares on the slow rhythm of the desert, a rhythm that has pervaded its environment with most activities taking place in the morning till late afternoon.

As there is no specific economy in Djanet, about 80℅ of locals are working in government jobs .. Employers, agents, doctors, teachers, keepers, etc. depending on the certificate of each. Meanwhile, 20℅ are working as daily labourers, merchants, artisans, construction workers and so on. Various people who inhabited this plateau left numerous traces in its archaeological record. It is a very culturally-rich place.

In Djanet, there is an old 16th-century castle classified as the World Heritage Site. It also has a museum displaying many relics from the surrounding areas.
