The Golden Monkey National Park is located in Weixi County, Diqin prefecture. It is one of the 3 national parks in Diqin prefecture.
The rare animal - Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys living on the mountain is protected by the Chinese government and is as important as The Giant Panda. About 1000 wild golden monkeys live in the virgin forest on Baimang snow mountain (2800 m-3100 m) at Tacheng. Tacheng is 120 km from Shangrila and 160 km from Lijiang.
The best time to watch wild monkeys is 09:00-09:30 in the morning while the forest staff feed them food. If you go there during the noontime or afternoon, the monkeys are usually taking a nap and will not be active the way they are in the morning.
