Switzerland: The Ultimate Hidden Gem

Trekking Switzerland

For years, I dreamed of crossing Greenland in winter—from east to west on skis, sleeping in a tent along the way. Such a journey usually takes 30–40 days, depending on the weather.

Before attempting it, I did two short polar-style training expeditions in Greenland and Svalbard, traveling on skis and sleeping in tents. They lasted only about three days each, but even that was enough. Enough to realize that my big dream might actually be… a rather foolish endeavor.

Why? Because the landscape barely changes. Endless white. Flat terrain. Maybe a few small hills. Day after day. The same horizon. The same color. The same silence. Someone once told me that these crossings are actually a form of mental training—learning to live with nothing but white around you for weeks. Maybe he was right.

Then I thought about Switzerland. Switzerland is exactly the opposite. You can spend months—even years—exploring it, even though the country is incomparably smaller than Greenland. The scenery is constantly changing: lakes, towering alpine peaks, deep valleys, forests, glaciers, villages, waterfalls. There is beauty nearly everywhere you go.

People often ask me about “Swiss hidden gems” or secret places. But the truth is simple: there is no real list of hidden gems in Switzerland. Almost the whole country is a hidden gem.

Whether you’re hiking through the Alps, kayaking on a turquoise lake, or strolling through a quiet village, Switzerland surprises you at every turn. Every corner feels like a discovery, every path an adventure. It’s a country that keeps giving—without ever asking for much in return.

So if you’re dreaming of a journey that combines breathtaking scenery, adventure, and a touch of magic, forget about searching for a few secret spots. Just go explore Switzerland. The hidden gem is the country itself.
