From September 1943 until June 1944 the city lived under a regime of terror. Nazi occupation and collaboration with fascist elements in the city lead to many tragic events but also many stories of heroes.

A tour of the places linked to this part of recent history includes the Commonwealth Cemetery, the Museum of Liberation in Via Tasso and the site of the attack on German troops in March 1944 which lead to the infamous massacre at the Fosse Ardeatine.

Hear the tragic stories from the desperate attempts to defend the city against the advancing German troops in September 1943 to the joyous arrival of the Allied troops the following year. During that time the local people tried as best as possible to continue their lives, but the harsh reality of the occupation really hit with the round-up of citizens in the Jewish Ghetto on October 16th 1943.
