OXFORD VISITOR TIPS:

Thanks to Oxford University’s 38 colleges & several English schools, the ‘city of dreaming spires’ is a very energetic, youthful city with many affordable cafes & restaurants.  Initially, a centre for ecclesiastical learning, the relationship between ‘the town & gown’ has not always been easy- besides Harry Potter film-spots, there have been scholastic riots, which led to many students leaving to found Cambridge! Christchurch meadows, the Thames river path, New College, Magdalene & Jesus College are amongst some of the best places we recommend you visit! Our Bicycle Tours & Walking Tours visit many of the most scenic spots. Why not go punting or for a river cruise and follow in Lewis Carrol’s footsteps (Alice in Wonderland) and relax by the Thames at The Head of The River Pub  or at No. 1 Folly Bridge restaurant/bar?

Other great pubs which our Pub Tours frequent include The Bear (see its huge collection of ties on its walls, located on Alfred Street) & The Eagle & Child (visited by Tolkien & CS Lewis, located on St Giles). Located close to Broad Street & Holywell Street are The Kings Arms  (reputed to have more brain cells per square inch than any other pub in England!) and The Turf Tavern (see Inspector Morse and the Medieval City Walls). The Mitre on High Street is another of the oldest pubs in town.

Oxford’s famous sons & daughters include 13 of Britain’s prime ministers who studied at Christchurch alone! Its bell tower traditionally rings out 101 times at 9.05pm to hasten the students inside but now you can just cross over the road to visit G & D’s ice cream café till midnight! And if you’re based in Oxford for a while & want to explore other cities, book fun day trips & weekend tours with I Love Oxford Tours too, as we can also arrange coach trips to destinations across the Cotswolds and South England, in conjunction with other guides, such as a Shakespeare actor-guide in Stratford-Upon-Avon and a Mr Darcy guide in Bath.
