The period of Ottoman occupation 

The first period of Ottoman Turkish rule lasts from 1499to 1687. Nafpaktos becomes see of a sancak (administrative unit) called Inebahti. Sultan Vayazit II protectedthe entrance of the Corinthian Gulf from western powers through both the occupation of Nafpaktos and theerection of the Rio and Antirrio forts. The city remaineddensely inhabited and commercially important throughout the Ottoman period. A major source of information isthe Ottoman traveler Evliya Çelebi.The Ottoman rule was interrupted in 1687, when thetown was re-capitulated by the Venetians under generalMorosini. With the Treaty of Karlowitz in 1699, Nafpaktos among other Venetian possessions was concededagain to the Ottomans.
