This old railway station, reopened as a museum in december 1986 is not only dedicated to impressionist artists but to all the works ( paintings, scuptures, drawings, architecture, furniture, objets ot art) produced between 1848 and 1914 except modern art such as fauvism, cubism etc...

It showcases over 70 years of artistic innovations from Delacroix to Gauguin and Van Gogh.

Thanks to this great idea, we can understand why the new generation of artists were violently rejected and considered as trouble makers

Instead of painting nobility and academic beauty , the young generation  of artists definitively swept away the old traditions and wanted to paint reality and truth. No godesses but real women of all social classes; countryside,workers and poor people working hard and very simply dressed.
