The War of Independence and the Integrationto the Greek State 

On May 21st 1821 a Greek fleet sieges the castle and theOttoman army defended itself in the citadel. After thefailed attempt to capitulate Antirrio, the Greek army under the command of Giorgos Anemoyannis Paxinou triedto set the Ottoman fleet on fire. All the aforementionedattacks having failed, the Greek armies pulled out fromthe Nafpaktos area.In the end of 1828 the governor John Kapodistrias delegated Kitsos Tzavellas to campaign against the Turksof Roumeli (the mountainous region between Nafpaktos and Thebes). In March 1829 the Greek armiesblocked the castle of Nafpaktos form the sea side. OnApril 18th 1829 the Ottoman authorities signed a treatyof concession of Nafpaktos, and the town was includedto the Greek State. After the liberation, many familiesof military commanders, such as the family of KitsosTzavellas, settled within the town
