Regarded as the home of Ngai - the God of Kikuyu, Meru and Embu; the mountain is awesome and breathtaking. With its snow capped peaks, glaciers, tarns and lakes (believed to be among the deepest), snow fields, hanging valleys, cliffs and rock faces, the land offers plethora of options for rock climbing.

Endangered animals like the colobus monkeys and the mountain rock hyrax high altitude adapted plants and birds are found here amid very unique montaine and and vegetation. About 11 species of endemic plants. these plants varies with altitude and rainfall. Between 1200m and 1850m this climate favour croton associates Juniper Procera and podocarpus ssp. In wetter areas 2200 mm per year the cassipourea malosana dominate this part. In higher altitudes 2500 to 3000m with higher rainfall there is more dense belt of  bamboo, higher up there lobellias and lichens.

Around the mountain slopes lives the industrious Meru famous with Miraa farming, the Kikuyus and the Embu. All are known as great farmers and very charming.
