Kanyakumari (also spelled Kanniyakumari) is a coastal town at the southernmost tip of mainland India, in Tamil Nadu. It is famous for its unique geography where the Bay of Bengal, the Indian Ocean, and the Arabian Sea meet, and for its historic temples, memorials, and sunrise/sunset views.

Geography and location

Kanyakumari sits at the extreme south of the Indian peninsula, about 85–90 km south of Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) and roughly 700 km south of Chennai. The town is part of Kanyakumari district, Tamil Nadu, and is a major pilgrimage and tourist destination because of its coastal location and religious significance.

Main attractions

Thiruvalluvar Statue

  • Kumari Amman Temple: A centuries-old Hindu temple dedicated to Goddess Kanya Kumari (a form of Parvati). It is the town’s spiritual core and gives Kanyakumari its name.

  • Vivekananda Rock Memorial: A memorial built on a small rocky island a short boat ride from the shore, commemorating Swami Vivekananda’s meditation there in 1892.

  • Thiruvalluvar Statue: A 133-foot (40.6 m) tall statue of the Tamil poet-saint Thiruvalluvar, standing on a rocky islet near the Rock Memorial.

  • Sunrise and sunset viewpoint: The confluence of three water bodies makes Kanyakumari one of the few places in India where you can watch both sunrise and sunset over the sea from the same spot.

  • Gandhi Memorial (Gandhi Mandapam): Built where Mahatma Gandhi’s ashes were kept before immersion; designed so that on Gandhi’s birthday, sunlight falls on the exact spot where his urn was placed.

Cultural and religious significance

Kanyakumari has long been a pilgrimage site for Hindus, with legends linking the Kumari Amman Temple to the goddess Parvati’s tapas (penance) to marry Shiva. The town also attracts visitors interested in Tamil culture and history, given its connection to Thiruvalluvar and its role as a southern gateway of India.

Practical notes for visitors

  • Best time to visit: October to March, when the weather is cooler and less humid.
