While traveling by the Albanian border, amidst the unspoiled natural landscape of the mountains lies a hidden jewel, Hridsko lake. Frequented by bikers in the region, the lake has been a common name in several legends and fairy tales, and is mentioned more than once as one of the most beautiful glacial lakes in the Balkan.
Some legends suggest that forest fairies are hidden in the woods around the lake, and that they escape from the eyes of the local people. It is also believed by locals that swimming in the lake can bring a person wealth, happiness, and fulfilling marriage. Such is the allure of Hridsko, one might even wonder if its actually magical.
The best way to explore Hridsko lake is to first arrive in Plav. From there, one can go to the Bajrovica mountain house, and follow an easy hiking trail that leads up to the lake and takes about half an hour.
Hridsko lake is located just under the two peaks of Small and Big Rid. It is frozen during the winter, making it difficult to find any sorts of fish in there; however that does not take away the appeal of this place.
For anyone who wishes to visit Hridsko lake, it is recommended to make a circle around the lake and take beautiful pictures of both the water and the nearby surrounding area. They can also taste forest fruits, which are extremely delicious, and part of the experience.
