The lofty places on Antigua still bear the crowning glory of bygone days. The many estate house Antiguans call 'Buffs" all once stood majestically upon our gently rolling hillocks.  The sweeping vistas gave the aristocrats commanding views of their subjects in the sprawling sugarcane fields below. 'Massa' (Antiguan for 'master') extolled the virtues of the therapeutic ocean breezes while he kept a sharp eye on the peasantry.

This house called Scott's Hill, located atop an eastern promontory that overlooks St John's city, was home to many prominent British and Irish families including doctors and other high ranking civil servants from the 1800's. It was formerly built as a girls' reformatory but was never used for that purpose. It has not changed much in its style of architecture or size and still sits on its original foundation.  Comparison of this corner today with that of pictures taken in the 1800's are identical!  It is now owned by Mr Ewart Harney.

A short visit to  Scott's Hill will no doubt give you an idea of the  feeling  of grandeur its occupants might have felt eons ago..
