Carried away by our excitement about discovering a side of Grahovo we had never known before, we decided to take even narrower roads — the kind where passing another car requires a little more patience — all the way to the dam that guards Grahovsko Lake.
It is on roads like these that people naturally slow down and begin to notice everything around them.
We often jumped out of the camper just to capture the tree-lined roads we proudly passed through, almost like a ceremonial pathway.
The scent of freshly cut grass, dry earth, sun-heated fields, and sprinklers watering nearby farmland became part of our entire experience of this part of Montenegro.
On both sides of the road, once you pass the center of the small town, tidy gates and drawn curtains suggest that the area is filled more with weekend houses than homes where people live permanently. The road stretches almost perfectly straight across the plain before slowly cutting toward the forest, where clearly marked turns lead right toward the lake.
It was not difficult to find, although we kept checking the map the entire way and wondering how we had never noticed this place from the main road running almost parallel to the lake.
A narrower road through the pine forest led us up to the lake, and the approach was so sudden that we did not even have time to prepare ourselves for the beautiful view waiting for us. Although Grahovsko Lake is artificial, much of what you see feels completely wild and untouched.
The creation of Grahovsko Lake in the municipality of Nikšić was initiated by national hero Vasilije Kovačević Čile back in 1952. The idea was to collect water for local farmers who had fertile land but very little natural water supply.
A monument near the lake reads: “Vasilije Kovačević Čile, national hero, laid the foundation stone on the dam on June 1st, 1952. The dam was completed in 1962 and restored in 1988. The people of Grahovo erected the monument to Čile on July 15th, 1988.”
The lake is located around 500 meters downstream from the source of the Grahovo River, on watertight dolomite terrain. The dam is 30 meters high, its crown is 3 meters wide, and it stands at an altitude of around 780 meters above sea level. The dam is approximately 170 meters long, and by walking across it you reach a pine forest where several dirt trails continue deeper into the woods.
During summer, Grahovsko Lake becomes a place for gatherings and socializing, while locals proudly say that the water is so clean you can drink it while swimming. The lake is also rich in fish, making it a peaceful retreat for recreational fishermen.
We also found peace there, surrounded by pine landscapes, birdsong, and the sounds of frogs. That perfect combination in which people become one with nature was enough for us to carry a piece of that peace away with us.
This is certainly one of those places that often impresses foreigners more than locals, and with just a little effort it could become a perfect camping destination because, judging by what travelers usually search for, very little more would be needed.
