Empowering Future Tour Guides A Transformative Training Programme

I initiated the first ever tour guide training program in partnership between the Pakistan Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management (PITHM) and Habib Public High School which has culminated in an enriching and immersive Tour Guide Training Programme. This initiative is designed to equip students with the expertise required to become certified tour guides, thereby contributing to the promotion and conservation of Pakistan’s vast cultural and historical heritage. The programme follows a meticulously crafted curriculum that seamlessly integrates theoretical instruction with extensive field training, ensuring a holistic educational experience in tourism.


The programme commenced with a comprehensive introduction to the fundamentals of tourism and guiding. Students delved into the core aspects of the tourism industry, gaining insights into the roles and responsibilities of tour guides, various guiding techniques, and the ethical and professional standards essential in the field. This foundational module prepared students for a series of structured excursions aimed at reinforcing their theoretical knowledge through hands-on experiences.


The practical segment of the training began with a journey from Karachi to Sehwan, where students explored significant historical and cultural landmarks. Their itinerary included a visit to Sehwan Fort and the revered shrine of Hazrat Lal Shahbaz Qalandar, where they had the unique opportunity to witness the traditional Dhamal. An interactive seminar on Sufism at further deepened their understanding of the spiritual and historical importance of these sites.


Continuing their journey, the students traveled to Mohenjo-Daro, one of the most iconic remnants of the Indus Valley Civilization. Here, they attended an in-depth session on the site's history and archaeological discoveries, including the renowned King Priest statue, the Dancing Girl figurine, various seals, and terracotta artifacts. This visit played a pivotal role in broadening their knowledge of ancient civilizations and their enduring influence on contemporary society. Subsequently, the group proceeded to Larkana, where they engaged in discussions on historical preservation and sustainable tourism practices.


The training further extended to Sukkur, where students explored prominent landmarks such as the Sadhu Bela Temple complex, Lansdowne Bridge, Ayub Arch, and several significant shrines. A highlight of this leg was their visit to Jokar Jo Daro, where they witnessed firsthand the meticulous process of unearthing and preserving historical artifacts. Additionally, they attended a lecture on hotel management and hospitality services, broadening their understanding of the tourism industry beyond guiding.


At IBA Sukkur, students participated in a seminar on sustainable tourism, where they gained invaluable insights into responsible tourism practices and environmental conservation. The next phase of their expedition took them to Khairpur, where they visited Faiz Mahal, the shrine of Sachal Sarmast, and date farming sites, deepening their appreciation for regional culture and traditions. Their exploration continued in Mithi, where they visited the historic mound of Gad-dhi Bhit, followed by a visit to Nagarparkar, where they enjoyed a musical evening and a bonfire at the Rooplo Kolhi Resorts, ancient temples, and picturesque waterfalls.


The final stage of the training included a visit to Keenjhar Lake, the shrine of Noori Jam Tamachi, and the magnificent Shah Jahan Mosque in Thatta, culminating in a tour of the Makli Necropolis. This extensive field experience ensured that students developed a comprehensive understanding of Pakistan's diverse historical and cultural landscapes.


Throughout the programme, students actively engaged in modules covering geography, history, communication, customer service, and practical guiding techniques. They honed essential skills such as effective communication with diverse audiences, public speaking, conflict resolution, and multilingual guiding. Additionally, they acquired expertise in designing and managing tour itineraries, time management, and strategic route planning. Special emphasis was placed on hospitality and customer service, reinforcing the significance of providing memorable experiences to tourists. Sessions on local cuisine and handicrafts further encouraged students to promote regional specialties.


Upon completion of the programme, students underwent a rigorous examination at PITHM. Candidates will be awarded the "Certified Tourist Guide" certification at the PITHM graduation ceremony on April 25, 2025. This credential will enable them to obtain official tour guide licenses, allowing them to pursue professional careers within Pakistan's burgeoning tourism industry. Having successfully navigated this intensive training programme, the graduates are now well-prepared to contribute to the sector by offering insightful and well-guided tours that showcase Pakistan’s rich cultural legacy.


Beyond individual certification, the initiative has broader implications. The students are preparing a comprehensive report to be presented outlining strategic recommendations for enhancing tourism in Pakistan. This report is expected to serve as a valuable resource for policymakers, providing innovative perspectives on promoting cultural heritage and attracting a larger influx of tourists to historical sites.


The collaboration between PITHM and Habib Public High School has set a commendable precedent for educational institutions aiming to integrate practical training with academic coursework. By bridging classroom learning with real-world experiences, the Tour Guide Training Programme has successfully equipped students with the knowledge and skills required for thriving careers in tourism. As these young guides step into the professional realm, they will play a crucial role in preserving and promoting Pakistan’s cultural and historical treasures, ensuring that these invaluable assets remain accessible and cherished by future generations.
