Newyork – como se escribieron antes...  - as how were written before ...

La historia comenzó en los años 70 del siglo 19, cuando un hombre joven de buenas cualidades procedente de la parte superior de Hungría llegó a Pest, llamado Max Aufricht con una moneda de plata y un diploma de maestro de escuela en su bolsillo con el deseo de probar suerte.

The history began in the 70s of the 19th century when a young man of good qualities from the top of Hungary arrived in Pest, called Max Aufricht with a silver coin and a school teacher’s diploma  in his pocket with the desire to try his luck.

Su ambición y un objetivo determinado son contrarrestados por su pobreza y de su juventud. Le gustaría continuar sus estudios y trabajar en la ciudad. Con la carta de recomendación encontró trabajo como profesor particular de la familia de Armin Popper, propietario de una empresa textil, persona de buena reputación y de esta manera sus problemas económicos han sido resueltos el inmediato. Enseguida obtuvo un doctorado jurídico y de forma paralela comenzó a aprender el francés. Él decidió tomar nombre e apellido húngaros: Max por Miksa y Aufricht por Aranyi. También se le ordenó ir a París para un viaje de negocios.

His ambition and a certain objective are counterbalanced by his poverty and his youth. He would like to continue his studies and work in the city. With the letter of recommendation he found a job as a tutor in the family of Armin Popper, owner of a textile company, a person of good reputation and in this way their economic problems have been resolved immediately. He promptly obtained a legal doctorate and parallel began to learn French. He decided to take a Hungarian name and a surname: Max by Miksa and Aufricht by Aranyi. He was also ordered to go to Paris for a business trip.

En breve el joven viajó a París para un misión estatal - en estos tiempos los negocios principalmente enlazaron en los cafés. El escogió como su lugar favorito el famoso café parisino, llamado 'La Paix' y es donde se reunió con el director de la empresa New York - una de las más importantes compañías aseguradoras en el mundo. Como resultado de esta reunión fue encargado para formar una red en Hungría, ya que la compañía tuvo en todas las capitales europeas edificios representativos. En Budapest también comenzó los  preparativos para construir un palacio, realizado sobre los planos de Alajos Hauszmann (arquitecto húngaro) de estilo ecléctico del renacimiento italiano.

In brief the young man travelled to Paris for a state mission - in these times businesses were bound mainly  in cafés. He chose his favourite place the famous Parisian café, called 'La Paix'  where he met the director of the company New York - one of the most important insurance companies in the world. As a result of this meeting he was amended to form a network in Hungary, as the company had a representative buildings in all European capitals. In Budapest he also began to prepare building a palace made on the base of the drawings of Alajos Hauszmann (Hungarian architect) in eclectic style of Italian Renaissance.

La planta baja era la parte más magnífica del edificio. Hay 14 demonios guardianes de las ventanas, denominados: "Asmodeo" (demonio de la lujuria, o también es presentado como el rey de todos los demonios, similar a la concepción cristiana de Satanás y la figura primitiva de la sabiduría antigua). Su interior es de mármol, bronce, de seda y terciopelo, las escaleras están decoradas con estatuas de bronce, fuentes con continuo susurro de agua y arañas de Venecia. La coloración del interior es muy discreta, pinturas, algunas con figuras alegóricas de la música y el amor, - otras decoradas con figuras de faunos burlones y bacantes. No hay nada milagroso que fue comparado por el palacio de Luis II, Rey de Baviera. El costo de los muebles es casi un cuarto de millón pengoes (moneda de la época) - fue una perfecta armonía con los espacios interiores.

The ground floor was the most magnificent part of the building. There are 14 demon guardians of windows, called: 'Asmodeus' (demon of lust, or it is also presented as the king of all demons, similar to the Christian concept of Satan and primitive figure of the ancient wisdom). Its interior is made of marble, bronze, silk and velvet, the stairs are decorated with bronze statues, fountains with continuous whispering of water and Venetian chandeliers. The coloring of the interior is very discreet, paintings - some with allegorical figures of music and love, -the others are decorated with figures of mocking fauns and bacchantes. There is nothing miraculous that was compared with the palace of Louis II, King of Bavaria. The cost of the furniture is almost a quarter million pengoes (currency of the time) – had  a perfect harmony with the interior spaces.

- El café es un café literario, de 23 de octubre de 1894 celebró su fiesta de apertura y en este primer día - según una anécdota, un  periodista alegre guiado por el  escritor Ferenc Molnar tiró la llave del café al Danubio para que este lugar será siempre abierto día y noche.

- The café  is a literary café, on the 23rd of October of in 1894 it held its opening party and on this first day - according to an anecdote, a joyful journalist guided by the writer Ferenc Molnar threw away the key of the café to the Danube for the purpose that this place will always open day and night.

- El elegante café Newyork atrajó aristócratas, filisteos, igualmente bohemios - como la luz cegadora atrae a todo tipo de mariposas o escarabajos. Nadie fue capaz de resistir su magia. Todos conocíamos a todos, decían los escritores: "Al entrar el camarero te sirve inmediatamente, sin esperar que pides algo, aparte de obtener tu café diario sin una palabra,  te trae un tintero y papel".

- The elegant café Newyork attracted aristocrats, Philistines,and equally bohemians - as the blinding light attracts all types of butterflies or beetles. No one was able to resist their magic. All we knew all, the writers said: "When you enter, the waiter served you immediately, without expecting you to ask for something, apart from obtaining your daily coffee without a word , he brings you an inkwell and paper".

- Entre los invitados - algunos hicieron aquí su contabilidad, otros escribieron o vendieron sus libros, habían periódicos locales y extranjeros…  era un verdadero paraíso artístico especialmente para los bohemios.

- Among the guests - some made their accountancy here, others wrote or sold their books, there were local and foreign newspapers… it was a real artistic paradise especially for  bohemians.

Sr. Adolf Harsányi - maestro de café y presidente de Corporación de Café - un hombre educado, sonriente y amable, incluso amante de la literatura, fue el alma de café. Inventó el "plato de literato" o con otro nombre "ligeramente literario” que no era otra que un plato de algunos jamones, embutidos y quesos bien presentado y servido por muy poco dinero o por crédito, pero exclusivamente a los escritores. En tiempos difíciles muchos vivieron de eso.

Mr. Adolf Harsányi - master of coffee and president of Coffee Corporation - an educated man  smiling and friendly, even  a lover of literature, was the soul of the café.He invented the 'dish of literate' or with another name ’slightly literary' that was not other one than a well presented and served  plate of some ham, sausages and cheese  for very little money or credit, but exclusively for the writers. In difficult times many lived on this.

Entre los famosos camareros hay uno muy especial, es Gyula Reisz, además de servir  litros de capuchinos y dar consejos, rápidamente reconoció el talento y a través veinte y seis años fue - consultor, editor, crítico y muy amigo de todos ellos. El pagó la 'diferencia' por la ilusión de nuestro destino y nuestras ganancias y entre nuestra luz espiritual y los callejones sin salida…

Among the famous waiters there is one very special,  Gyula Reisz - in addition to serve liters of caphuchinos and to give advices, quickly recognized the talents and through twenty-six years was - consultant, editor, reviewer, critic and close friend of all of them. He paid the 'difference' by the illusion between our destiny and our profits and between our spiritual light and the dead end roads…..

En Europa - en este maravilloso e inquieto edad de la vida mundana -, a todos los buenos escritores vivieron en un café. Balzac se pensó que el hombre puede morir a causa de las cincuenta mil tazas de café que se bebió mientras que escribió: ’la vida es sólo comedia….’

In Europe - in this wonderful and restless age of mundane life - all the good writers lived in a café. Balzac  thought that the man could die from the fifty thousand cups of coffee that he drank while he wrote : life is only a comedy….

Con la llegada de la Primera Guerra Mundial, la vida del café transformó radicalmente: no sólo el café fue amargo, pero también la vida, la juventud se marchó conviertendo soldados combatientes en las trincheras….

With the arrival of the First World War life of the café was radically transformed: not only the coffee was bitter but also  life,  youth went away and they became soldiers fighting in the trenches….

Menús baratos, café de achicoria, pan tosco y cuando el sistema de racionamiento llegó  el dinero desaparecido e incluso las mujeres del pan se caminaron por ahí con un par de tijeras entre las mesas….

Cheap menus, chicory coffee, oat bread, and when the rationing system  arrived, money disappeared and even the women of the bread just walked around among tables with a pair of scissors.

En un antiguo anuncio del café la frase de "Nos reunimos después de la actuación teatral en el Newyork", con humor se cambió con la esperanza de supervivencia: "Nos vamos a reunir después de la guerra en Newyork! ".

In an old announcement of the café, the phrase of "We met each other after the theatrical performance in the Newyork", was changed with humour with the hope of survival: "We’ll meet each other after the war in Newyork! ".

Todo estaba cambiado: por un lado se estalló la epidemia de gripe española (1918) - en el otro lado después de la guerra perdida, nadie había deseado ir a un café.
Everything  was changed: on the one hand  the epidemic of Spanish grippe/flu (1918) broke out,- on the other hand after the lost war nobody desired to go to a café.

El antiguo espíritu del café desapareció y  se convirtió en un club normal e incluso en los ceniceros fue legible: No hablar de política, diviértase!

The old spirit of the café disappeared and it became a normal club and even in the ashtrays was legible:’ Do not talk about politics, have fun!’

El apogeo de los cafés en el sentido clásico se terminó debido a la guerra, la vida de la sociedad se cambió por completo. El próximo propietario del café fue Vilmos Tarjan, un reportero sin trabajo y arruinado. Para resolver su situación comenzó a jugar a las cartas y ganó medio millón pengoes  y junto con el dinero de otros ricos socios compró el derecho de alquiler.

The golden age of cafés in classical sense is terminated due to the war, the life of society  completely changed. The next owner of the café was Vilmos Tarjan, a reporter without work and ruined. To resolve his situation he began to play cards and won half a million pengoes and  he  bought the rental right with the other wealthy partners.

Después de una gran limpieza abrió sus puertas de nuevo y a través de sus contactos, Tarjan invitó a los aristócratas y personas importantes de la sociedad. Su recién formado restaurante,  llamado "Aguas profundas" era un lugar de encuentro para los más distinguidos círculos.

After a great cleaning the doors of the Newyork café opened again and Tarjan invited aristocrats and important people from the society by his contacts His newly formed restaurant, called "Deep Water" was a meeting place for the most distinguished circles.

"Es maravilloso que todo el mundo se siente bien toda la noche, tanto la persona que toda la noche con un café barato de ochenta ’pengoes’ se deleita mirando mujeres vestidas de última moda… como la otra también que come un plato de ’Horse’ D'oeuvres en la "Agua Profunda" ."

"It is wonderful that everyone feels well all night  both the person who spends his time near a cheap coffee of eighty ’pengoes’,  taking  delight in women dressed in latest fashion  and the person who eats a plate of 'Horse' D'oeuvres in the "Deep Water" ."

Algunos años más tarde Vilmos Tarjan había renovado y ampliado el café. Compró alfombras caras, también incorporó un bar con muebles de caoba y luz mística …. Las noches eran inolvidable hasta la llegada de los años 30, la crisis económica y más tarde el estallido de la Segunda Guerra Mundial terminó con este segundo esplendor. En 1938 hubo 167 cafés en la capital, pero en 1947 sólo 90.

Some years later Vilmos Tarjan had renewed and extended the café. He bought expensive carpets, also incorporated a bar with mahogany furniture and mystic light ….  Nights were unforgettable until the arrival of the1930s. The second splendour of the café  ended because of the  economic crisis and later the outbreak of the Second World War.  In 1938 there were 167 cafes in the capital, but in 1947  there were only 90.

Tiempo de la posguerra. En el año 1954, después de su reconstrucción abrió sus puertas con un nuevo nombre "Café Hungaria", decía la gente, que es casi como lo fue en su esplendor, y al final fuera recibido con un sentimiento mixto de nostalgia. Un escritor dijo: "El viejo Newyork murió en el pasado. Un hermoso y nuevo café se abre hoy en su lugar: Hungaria - para vivir y hacer florecer un nuevo mundo… …"

Time of postwar. In the year of 1954, after its reconstruction it opened its doors with a new name 'Cafe Hungaria', people said, it was almost the same as it had been in its splendour, and at the end  guests reacted on it with a mixed and nostalgic feeling. A writer said: 'The old Newyork died in the past. A beautiful new café opens today in this place named  Hungaria so as that a new world will live and flourish .

Su historia reciente: el edificio fue adquirido y restaurado por la cadena hotelera italiana ’Boscolo’ en 2001. Han invertido alrededor de 80 millones de euros para la renovación del edificio, que estaba en estado de ruina cambiando en un lujoso hotel de 5 estrellas que abrió sus puertas en el año 2007.
Its recent history: the building was purchased and renovated by the Italian hotel chain Boscolo in 2001. They have invested about 80 million euros for the renovation of the building which was in a ruined state, it was changed in a luxurious 5 star hotel that opened its doors in 2007.
